SAS and LRDG in North Africa

Posted by zirrian on 05 Oct 2014, 10:21

Greetings!

For some strange reasons, I want to build a raider force for North Africa to play in Bolt Action. SAS Jeeps, LRDG Chevys, all the good stuff. Problem is, no SAS or LRDG infantry around. Only one pose at Foundry, but seeing how it's a solitary pose...let's stay with no figures. Converting from 8th army minis is problematic because they had no Bren ammo pouches, because they had no Brens, only Vickers Ks.

Aaaaand here we are. No such figures anywhere as far as I'm concerned. Does any of you know if anyone making them in either plastic, metal or resin (Hagen? Schilling? Germania? Any of you?), as I'd really like decent 1/72 or 20mm raiders to paint and play with. The Jeeps and trucks are covered thankfully, with the excellent Matchbox set, now reissued by Revell, so only infantry needs to be acquired somehow.

Thanks for your time.

Zirrian,
there are a few interisting options you could check.

D-Day Miniature Studio - 72004 - LRDG patrol at rest (3 very nice 1/72 resin figures)
http://ddayminiaturestudio.com/172-figures.html

Milicast - FIG072 - SAS Jeep crew in North Africa (2 resin figures in 1/76)
http://www.milicast.com/shop/product.ph ... 153&page=2

Not sure what else might be out there, but since nearly all 1/76 metal or resin manufacturers are located in the UK, I guess it's not unlikely that more usable figures were released over the decades.

In general one can imho always combine british 8th army (or similar) gear with different arabian head-dress.

Best Regards.

Erich: like I said, the problem is the Bren pouch, which all 8th army men has. The Matchbox/Revell SAS/LRDG kit has good enough crew, maybe I'll need some seated SAS/LRDG to go with them.

mickey mouse: I need fighting men :) Infantry with Lee-Enfields, Thompsons, Vickers Ks, and so forth. Advancing, shooting, kneeling, etc. If the Esci/Revell/Airfix minis didn't have Bren puches, that would only leave me with the problem of getting heads for them. My existing commandos, and some "I should get them" French Foreign Legion, or early WW1 infantry from HaT could provide me some heads that could serve as a base of conversions.

Bren puches, too small (Arab heads would be too large on them), no Vickers K...

Messire, you have my deepest gratitude. I only gotta find pictures of them to see the sculpts, and find out of there are multiple poses, or only one for each. If not, well...I still can get Vickers K armed infantrymen and 20mm Breda for my LRDG Trucks :)

Hello,
About the LRDG figures, SHQ has 8 sets of 3 figures each. I have them and they are very nice. I think they cover all the possible poses of LRDG men, including running and firing their weapons. The sets are named:
DG01 LRDG Road Watch 2 kneeling-prone with binoculars 1 laying on his side
DG02 LRDG Driver, co driver and standing firing
DG03 2 standing firing 1 kneeling firing
DG04 2 running with rifles and a grenade, one with SMG
DG05 Relaxing - at ease
DG06 Officer standing reading and two radio men
DG07 2 1 kneeling setting fuse with demolition equipment
DG08 1 Doctor, 2 wounded men
There is also a set made by Matador. It has 7 figures which are very similar in size and style with the SHQ ones and can be mixed very nicely with them and also with the figures from the Matchbox LRDG set. The Matador set is named:
76E-26 LRDG men relaxing

Thanks for the suggestions! I just finished Stirling's Men, a really excellent book on the SAS :)

Just discovered something I'd like to share. Early War Miniatures have Indians in the service of the Commonwealth, and they doesn't wear Bren pouches - in fact, there are soldiers rocking a Vickers K! So I only need some heads for them, and ta-da, SAS infantry is one step closer :)
