Rarest 1/72nd figure sets

Posted by ModernKiwi on 16 Jan 2009, 09:59

What are the rarest 1/72nd plastic figure sets, and which do you own?

Anything Matchbox has got to be fairly rare these days I am thinking. They've been out of production for so long.

I read on PSR that the Revell Aztecs and Conquistadors are also rare.

I'm very happy to have in my possession a single set of the Aztecs, as well as a bunch of all the Matchbox sets.

I also have most of a set of the 2nd Airfix Commandos.

I'm not a collector as such, I buy figures to paint and to use, not to store them in a pristine box (indeed all my boxes get cut up and used).

So how about it? Are there rare Napoleonic sets out there? Or ancients?

hi kiwi,
i think really rare are sets from Airfix like "Tarzan", "Zooanimals", "Moonlanding", "People at the Railwaystation" and the "English Guards Musicians"
I got only a few pieces of the moonlandingset, found in a toybox on a secondhandmarket.

But, lucky me, i ve got the aztecs and conquistadores too.

I got the Aztecs for a Conan game that never eventuated, but I am still happy I have them.

I have a grand total of 1 (one) Airfix Astro-naughty, but I wish I could find some more.

In 1:72 plastic I think the most wanted sets are Revells Imperial Artillery and Swedish Cavalry (30YW) along with Conquistadores and Aztecs. Fortunately I own them all :-D

Also Matchbox´s Anzac and Japanese Infantry are pretty rare.

But the rarest Sets I own are in 1:32 scale. Medieval Footsoldiers from Airfix (with original package from the 70s), British Support Group (complete) and British Infantry of WW2. I´ve bought them in Ebay and they were not very cheap :(

I have have some Airfix Guard Musicians in the collection (no drums), and they're actually my brother's, but he doesn't want them so there they are in the hobbyroom. And the drums got lost very early, don't remember them at all. Had the Zoo animals, but lost most of them. Also some Farm animals.

I think I'll join this little conversation.

I can tell I have all the Matchbox sets, the Revell Aztecs and Conquistadors and lots of Atlantic sets too (like someone said, they were cheap those days).

I also had the tarzan set, the atlantic persians and romans (infantry and cavalry) but my mother gave them to somebody to play with them and they never came back.

Most of the Airfix sets (like The High Chaparral = rare) I have too, actually one week ago I bought the WWI Royal Horse Artillery, brand new for 4.90 Euro! I also have some figures of the Guards colour party.

By the way, Airfix is producing again. Here is the link:

I don't know about you guys, but here in Canada all the old Revell Napoleonic sets are very rare.

I have been just dying to get my hands on their Napoleonic British Infantry, ever since i started this hobby.

I can't get it over here. Does anyone know if it is still in production!!!

Thanks

No it is not in production anymore. But Revell has launched older sets every year. In three weeks after Nuremberg toy fair (perhaps I can get a ticket for this) we will know more. I heard something about the Aztecs being launched again. But I am not sure.

Hi,
The rarest set I have is a (not complete) set of the Airfix 1701 Guardsband.
I also have some Airfix 1705 German infantry of the type 1 set.
And Airfix 1711 Afrika Korps, Airfix 1709 8th Army and Airfix 1703 British infantry all type 1 sets. Produced from the 1960 till mid 1970's.
The old Revell sets are rare too, but you can find them still.

Hi,
Cut the Revell 2580 Nap. Prussian Infantry and Revell 2581 Nap. 95th Rifles from your "rare" list, because Revell is going to re-release them.
Sceduled for 01-2009 !

Thank god for that!!

More decent Napoleonic sets.

Now hopefully they will re-release their Napoleonic British Infantry in the coming months!!!

And I have a question for all of you who say that Revell stopped making their British Infantry set. If they stopped producing it, then how are so many of you guys still being able to get them????

Look as Hans Slaager's website photos.

http://www.waterama.nl/

Here is has 8 brand new packs!!!!!

????????

As I wrote in the other thread it's probably a toss up between

Preiser's Columbus set: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1678

and Atlantic 1003 (Geronimo Apache): http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=578

Never really had any of the Airfix sets growing up, but I do remember owning some of the Matchbox sets, not sure what I still have of those. I do have all of the Revell sets and a lot of the old Esci sets (not sure how rare those are).

I'm glad to see some companies are reissuing some of their older figures again...

Yep, I think you're right. I have the original set though:

The front of the box:

(I've seen a different version here: http://www.vecchigiocattoli.it/atlantic1003.jpg)

The back:

The sprue as listed by PSR:

The extra (?) sprue:

And yes, you're right about the reissue. I have that one too and it looks like it's basically 3x set 1003 in one box (that said, the extra sprue doesn't look to be an extra one after all, maybe PSR just didn't list the quantity of each figure in their review of Atlantic 1003, like they usually do). Just do the math and you'll see.

BTW, another thing I didn't realize until last night is that these figures are HO (1/87) scale, not 1/72. They did look sort of smallish to me..... ;-) And just think, they were first released 34 years ago!! :oldman:

Hi,
And 34 years ago there were only the Airfix figures and they tended to be 1:76 and even smaller. So I think Atlantic made figs to match the Airfix ones.
