My Waterloo Diorama (Early On)

Posted by Waterloo on 15 Oct 2008, 21:47

Well, I said I would do it, and I have. Here are some photos (badly taken) of my diorama of the Battle of Waterloo.

It's size is about 3.5 feet by 3.5 feet. It is very small but that is because I have to keep it in my bedroom, so I don't have a lot of space. I have a wooden panelled base, with layers of sculpted construction foam on top, with a layer of plaster for final landscaping. As with most of you, I painted the whole thing earth brown, and then added the grass, bushes and trees after.

I hope to one day have enough room to build a big diorama, where I can add lots of figs, but I will be leaving for university soon, so i'm afraid that day is a long way off.

In the mean time, here are the pics.

Hi Colin,

For a small diorama: it got all elements of the battle.
The attack of 'd Erlon, the thin line of british and allied forces, the cavalry standing ready.
In the middle the struggle for La Haie Sainte.
On the west side the huge french cavalry attacks and the defenders standing ready.
I even saw some conversions!

But on the west side of your diorama and on the third last photo I saw some Scottish highlanders. On that side of the battlefield there were no highlanders.....
Anyway a good looking diorama with very good painted figures.
A very nice view!!!

even the sandpit is there with the 95th rifles! The table seems bigger that 3.5x3.5 feet.

Great work Colin.

Cheers

To Martin, thank you for your kind words. However, the highlanders you saw in square are the 42nd Royal Highlanders. I thought they were in square, or am I mistaken. if not, then where were that throughout the day?

Hi Colin,
I mean the highlanders with the killed ones in front.
Where are they located?

Those highlanders are the 42nd, about to receive the French cavalry attack on the West side. I know its confusing because the 'square' isn't anywhere close to being finished. Knowing that, should the 42nd Royal Highlanders be there or not?

This is amazing. I'm jealous. I hope to someday have the space to attempt something this cool.

Colin, this is a great diorama. Not so much space but very impressive! And yes they were in the squares, they even defended some time "Goumont". A whole Scottish square was blown away.

Hi Colin,
All the kilted Highlanders (42nd, 79th and 92nd) were in Picton's division and this division was situated east of the "elm tree".
There were Scottish regiments on the west side: 71st Light (Highland) Rgt. and 73rd (Highland) Rgt. Neither regiment wore kilt nor bonnet.
Quote after Mark Adkin - The Waterloo Companion (page 178).

Thank you for that Martin. I now know about that information you gave was correct. I guess I'm so use to seeing all the paintings with the famous highlanders in square defending against the French cuirassiers, that i never actually that i shoud, check the historical accuracy. Also, I unfortunately do not have the Waterloo Companion book by Adkin. They are not available in Canad, and every used or old bookstore I've checked either has never heard of it, or can't get it. Too bad, cause i really want it. i hear it is a great book.
