Roman Legion in Battle

Posted by Dave2024 on 09 Sep 2025, 02:20

In the early Imperial Period Rome perfected the combination of tactics, training and weapons in a standing professional army. Their battle line was nothing short of a killing machine. I’ve attempted to replicate one here.

I’ve tried to touch on many of the elements that would have been employed at the time, from the legion throwing their spears at the first wave to dedicated medical staff to help the wounded.

As in one of my past pieces, I’ve worked differentiate the battle line of legionnaires. I’ve sourced a few more older sets now to push their variety even further. The same goes with the barbarians – this time not a single one of them is used twice.

In total there are 304 figures. I hope you enjoy!

These could be photos of re-enactors. Amazing stuff.

Stirring stuff indeed, straight from the opening scenes of ‘Rome’!

I is nice to see that you have the Romans in line forming a mincing machine as per the regulations.

Brilliant painting, groundwork and composition. Limbs and blood would be everywhere but it is an individual thing displaying the butchery of this type of combat.

Exceptional in my opinion, well done indeed.

Best wishes,

Chris

Excellent diorama Dave !
considering the huge amount of figures (304  ) the painting details of each figures are really first class .
Also the overall diorama composition (ground, trees, figures outside the big central mass) is remarkable !

Best congratulation Dave, I really love this masterpiece :yeah:

I can only agree and echo the praise of my colleagues, Dave. :-D

Everything about this diorama makes it a museum piece: the fantastic, hyper-realistic setting, the well-balanced ensemble of all the elements, the dynamism of the action, the superb painting of the figures, and the clever mix of figures from a multitude of manufacturers that can be identified (Caesar Miniatures, my favourites, Esci/Italeri, Zvezda, Phersu Miniatures, Linear-A, Hät, and I suppose some in 3D as well). :notworthy:  :notworthy:  :notworthy:

And all this without forgetting the comprehensive photo report to show us your work in detail.

My very best congratulations!

Santi.

Hello Dave,
not much to top what has already been said. I can watch for a long time, admire, sometimes not in agreement with details, but what the heck. Just a fantastic piece of work.
Greetings
Michael

Nothing new I can add! Super stuff!

Perhaps your next dio could be Teutoburg inspired with the great Linear A figures designed for that event?

I painted those Linear A figures about a year ago now, I love them as well. I’ve tried to use them in a diorama a couple of times, the problem is their scale is a little off. They look like giants when next to Hat, Zvezda, etc figures. I’m trying to work them into the corner of a build, separate from other sets. I haven’t been able to work it out yet.

I still haven’t figured out my next one yet. It’s fun trying to come up with new ideas though isn’t it.
