Wars of Louis XIV

Posted by Michael Robert on 07 Sep 2025, 20:01

Hello,

since Strelets have released their lace war range I have painting these guys. One of my favourite ranges ever. I have started some basing - for me quite new.
The wars of Louis XIV in a rather long life span can be covered - almost. It is quite an interesting time when the armies evolved from mercenary tercios and iron clad cavalry into standing armies of major European powers.
So here my first. The "unliked" Mars guys depicting the early time of Louis XIV reign. Here the Spanish. French will follow and later my WSS.
It is my first real attemps to base a troop (it is not really an army yet). I started with Mars figures to gain some experience.

Have fun - like I had

Very nice figures Michael! You have done these Mars fellows proud. You are certainly opening a huge door to create armies for. I wish you patience and persistence to get the job done. I found I had to scale back my ambitions stupidly thinking I would make armies for ALL the Napoleonic armies. I learned a LOT though. Have fun is the main thing. They look glorious.
Cheers,

I completely agree with Bessiere. Your paintjob has upgraded these Mars figures (which I always found rather ugly when viewed on PSR website) to a higher level, Michael.

Now go get the French!

Thank you Santi and Bessière,
French forces are under way; just managed to paint the flag of Turenne yesterday. Encouragement from the forum is always a great support, and not to mention the hundreds of good advices I pick up.
To be continued
Greetings
Michael

You do make those Mars figures look good. 've been using board game pieces and knock-off miniatures for practice myself. Keep it up!

Impressive units, Michael. I really love the new Strelets range of the WSS. But as some said already you did a great job on these Mars figs, that are not so very well sculptured.

Hello all :-)
thank you again for your encouragements.
So here are my French - thought I had uploaded them yesterday, but something went wrong and nothing signalled to me it was wrong, but then I found no contribution... ? Anyway, I give ot another try.
So, another batch of Mars French from early wars of Louis XIV the sun king.
Quite in the same style than the Spanish, but a bit more colourful.

Have fun Greetings Michael

Lovely work Michael! You’ve brought quite chunky (ugly?!) figures to life so nicely!

Another beautifully painted set of figures, Michael. The flag is hand-painted, isn't it? It looks fantastic.

I have overseen the hand painted flag. A very fiddly job and you made it.

Thank you both, Jan, Santi, for your comments.
It is part of my personal therapy to paint my flags myself. Printed flags is not my thing. Too perfect. Also, my pleasure is the painting process which helps me digest dense working days.
Glad you like the flag and there will be many more.
I'll be back (Austrian/Styrian accent)

Thank you so much for sharing, and my sincere congratulations on such an incredible piece of work, Michael. Personally, I prefer printed flags, especially when they're as complicated to paint as this one:
