Experimenting with 3D for Fantasy

Just for things I cannot get otherwise.
There's a shop next to my house that prints me 1/72 miniatures for around 60 pence each.

Wow!

You look at the prices for some of the speciality historical figures at our scale & you certainly must think 60p sounds attractive....not to mention the exorbitant P&P you avoid!

Yes, and it could be expensive paying 60p per figure when compared to a normal box with 40 or so figures, but in my case, 3D printing it is only for figures I can 't get in shops so I think it's OK.
BTW, those two from the pic above were free as it was a test :-)

60 p a figure would be dear for mass produced plastic figures but when compared to the pricey speciality metal figures I often buy, it's amazingly cheap.

Shape of things to come?

It's getting very popular in 10 and 15mm miniatures but I think it won't be so common in 1/72.

Gosh, that is wonderful! I enquired here where I live in Malta, and cheapest I could get was about 3 € per figurine, with maybe some discount if I ordered a lot of them at once. And the quality looks amazing.

Hence, you directed them at what file to print from a free repository of 3D models?

They require you bring the STLs to them.
Mine were free to download but if I bring originals that I paid, they may take them for them for free. Ideally, you should have your own 3d printer but my needs are minimum so I'm OK with printing this way seldomly.
I ordered two cave bears and some GW's Bloodletters. I'll show them here once I get them painted.

If you look at my WIP thread, you can see that half of my printed stuffis 1:72 already :) 28mm figures downscale nicely.

I am very interested in this process.

I would hope it would be a way to get figures/units that are inaccessible in 1/72 scale:

Late Roman Lanciari
SYW French hussars
Napoleonic Russian cossack artillery
SYW Russian infantry & cavalry
Mycenaean heroes.....

......we all have our lists! At any rate, 3D printing might make dreams come true?

Check Madox Miniatures for your SYW needs, he does most of them already :) For the Nappies, Wargaming3d, there's a guy making a ton of Napoleonics, he already did Russians, so you might be lucky. I'm not aware of any Late Romans at the moment nor Myceneans, but someone one day might do them. Although they are almost always scaled for 28mm, just downscale them to 80% and you're set :)

I am looking for a simple 3d software to create or alter existing figures. My dream is to create a detailed fighting sarissa palanx presenting all common knowledge about these fighter and all possible "gripping" styles, different shields, helmets, cuirasses etc..

Zvezda is working with 3d created figures - there has to be such a software.

What would be cool is to get the 3d files from videogames, and use to print your figures :P . Imagine all the repertoire of the Total War titles in 1/72 figurine...

The question is that I enquired, and usually they would require large modifications to make them suitable to be printed.

I think that it's being done already from PC game Warhammer. At least there's a guy in 3d cults who does models only seen in that game and not in the shops. The guy has lots of them so maybe the process is not so hard...

I suppose depends on the game. Something related to how many polygons has the model and technical stuff like that.

At least old videogames, such as the first Rome Total War, relied heavily on "textures", simply images stuck on to the model, the model itself was barely round and human in form. Nowadays modern videogames have improved a lot.

Here you can see an example of what can be done with a printer. These Bloodletters printed in 1/72 are like the painted one above:

Another lot without priming:
