1/72 Diorama "Achtung Jabo!"

Posted by T. Dürrschmidt on 16 Oct 2022, 19:53

Here are some pictures of my newest work, depicting a Sd Kfz 251 Halftrack with a 20mm Flak cannon, Normandy 1944. The vehicle was a ready made Ebay purchase. The seller crafted 2 vehicles together, a Sd Kfz 251 from Dragon Armour and a Sd-Kfz10 / 4 from an unkown brand...which is quite crude...so this is some kind of a Sdkfz 251/17. There is one historic photo showing a similar vehicle, but it does not look exactly the same like this one here.

The German troops were always desperately in need of armoured all-terrain AA-vehicles, so a vehicle like this is thinkable as a field modification.

This wasn´t a very work intensive diorama. I finished it at one weekend. I gave the vehicle a new coat of paint (color modulation) per airbrush and some green camo stripes. Vehicles in Normandy were mostly heavily camouflaged with fresh leaves because of the allied air supriority, so I gave it this specific look with some foliage and laser cut leaves (also to hide some of the inacurracies). I also changed the kit´s barrel with a metal one.

The landscape is a wooden base with about 10x15 cm with a small tree I built from some natural materials. The base was coated with wood filler, painted in different brown tones. After that I added different brands of shrubs and grass tufts (blended together with some bright olive green paint).

The five figures are all from AB, one of my favourite "classical pewter miniatures brand" though I have to say that 3d print is getting better and better.

Today was very good photo weather, so I took my usual photos in daylight with real nature in background....all photos have been taken with a regular, cheap Samsung mobile phone.

A funny and (in my eyes) quite nice weekend project.

Regards from Bavaria

Thomas

I think the photos aren't working? It says they're no longer available, just a head's up.

Very nice indeed.

Your outdoor technique for photography brings your models to life as the light is natural.

The vehicle and composition have the ‘feel’ of the period and in black and white would pass as original footage.

Excellent work.

Best wishes,

Chris

Great photos, Thomas. AB figures are great. Unfortunately I do not know a German retailer anymore. Any advice?

Superb modelling, painting, scenery and photography. Looking at these excellent pictures, you could very well imagine yourself amongst the Normandy 'bocage' and waiting for the next Allied fighter-bomber to appear.

Well done Thomas, fine work!

Very, very nice work. I love the Sdkfz versions, and the 20mm flak mounted is one of my favourites. Great job on the vehicle camouflage, the camo smocks and the overall composition of the work. A real pleasure to see.

Fantastic work, Tomas. It's as if we are seeing a real image of a documentary of the WWII.

Hello Conrad.
Please excuse me for getting in touch so late. I was on vacation near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We had a lot of dead spots, and I was a woman who chased me through the mountains.
I think her Dio is outstanding. Everything fits together well. There is nothing to complain about. The only thing I don't like is the proportions of the figures (legs that are too short and too fat). But they are made for it. It's just a matter of taste.

Hello Thomas
Of course I would also like to welcome you to our forum. I also think that you did a great first job. One piece of advice I would like to give you is: always put yourself in the shoes of the people on your Dio. It helps you see discrepancies. Imagine you run in front of a MG, or come close to Pz chains. you have to imagine each position. You did everything right here. everything very consistent. A successful start.
The only thing I would have to say would be mats or something similar laid out on the storage area. After a downpour, such a plane can quickly get stuck. But that's complaining at the highest level.

:-D Yes, the background is real, it´s the fields and trees around our house. Our next neighbour lives about 300 meters away. We have a lot of space without buildings. So I can use the background for every period. But I have to be aware of contrails in the sky. Once I did some photos of a medieval diorama and you could see several planes in the sky.

Thanks for all your comments!
