The Battle of Antietam ( Sharpsburg) 17th September 1862

I particularly like the broader panoramic views - the way the model blurs seamlessly into the background scenery is magnificent.

Battle of Antietam ( Sharpsburg ) 17th September 1862

Timeline 11.45 AM.

United States cavalry, supported by horse artillery, have crossed the Orndorff ( Middle) bridge and are deploying under a spirited fusillade, in order to engage the Confederate skirmishers posted there.

Image

Image

This bridge is lightly held as the Confederates, following the collapse of the sunken lane position, have had to retire in order not to be outflanked.

Meanwhile Major General A.E. Burnside has ordered another assault on the Rhorbach bridge.

With the triumphant Union forces under Brigadier General William French, advancing through the Piper cornfield towards Sharpsburg, the sands of time, it seems, are running out for General Lee.

Phew!

I redid the links and they have worked. Hooray!

Perhaps a moderator would be kind enough to clear the blank ones?

Thank you in advance.

Best wishes,

Pure inspiration Chris. Have also had a few problems posting photos this evening but eventually sussed it out. Your work is military history storytelling brought to life. Absolutely terrific work. If i could find fault I`d say perhaps the buildings are a bit too pristine, for my liking. But that is being an absolute pain in the ass.... amid so much magic who am i to find fault.

Yes, these pictures really look like movie stills! The quality of the painting, the buildings and the vegetation, light and photography - everything is just excellent.

Thank you for the kind comments, they are very much appreciated.

KB raises an interesting point.

All my buildings are weathered but due to the lighting ( the presence of the trees) it is not readily apparent.

Personally, upon reflection Joshua’s fence does look a bit pristine, but, Mrs Newcomer insisted that it was painted in the spring as she likes a tidy house!

Good spot Mr KB. The camera is merciless.

Best wishes,

Chris

Your compositions remind me of John Constable's rural scenes, notably his most famous painting, The Hay Wain. You combine an excellent use of perspective with the light and shade generated by vegetation to set up your figures and buildings to such excellent effect. I hope you will bring out a book one day!

Thank you very much Captain.

My strip light in the garage is useful as the light is from above and as a result tree shadows in the sky are rare. Nevertheless, it’s always good to check as the camera is merciless.

Your compliments are very much appreciated .

Time to prepare the Rhorbach bridge extension. Der Feldmarschall will not be happy as access to the freezer will be blocked.

Some negotiations will be required.

Best wishes,

Chris

Chris, you've annoyed me.

I gave away all my ACW figures a couple of years ago. No regrets.......until I look at your amazing photos. How annoyed am I????

It just seems so obvious to write that your photos bring the Civil War to life but it's true.
So, please keep annoying me & posting more.

Your modelling and photography is top rate Mr D. Antietam was the first battle that actually shocked the nation with the casualty lists. Bodies on the field were paid a bounty for burial which resulted in many being dumped down wells to make a quick buck. Disgraceful stuff. The bravery of the troops was unquestionable but their leadership and strategy was sadly the reason casualties were so high. Piecemeal attacks wasted the North's numerical superiority when coordinated attack would have overwhelmed nearly any point on the lines. John Brown Gordon will always be my favorite hero of the battle. I gave James a book on the man I hope he's had a chance to read. Thanks for sharing Mr D.

It seems impossible but your level of "movie recreation" is even improved, passing from exceptional to iper-galactic :-) !

the last "zoomed" picture left me breathless for its beauty !!!

I can only fully agree with the views of Bessiere and Enrico, Chris. Your work is spectacular from every point of view: the figures used, the settings in which they are placed and how they are placed, as well as the presentation of the story in the form of a movie. :notworthy:  :notworthy:  :notworthy:

Its beauty and its incredible degree of realism: it looks like a frame from a real movie.
