Fantastic vignettes as usual, I sometimes think that you show us some pictures from a movie. A great, great job, thank you very much for this Chris.

Thank you gentlemen for such lovely remarks.

I have been distracted by my Aspern project but was in the sunken lane this afternoon.

Best wishes,

Chris

Beautiful work, as always, Chris. I especially like the distance shot of the troops marching along Antietam Creek. I hope we'll get a closer look at the New York Zouaves in the future. And I'm glad to see that you were able to be lured from the Continent back to Maryland. ("From hill to hill, from creek to creek, Potomac calls to Chesapeake.")

Best,
John

Battle of Antietam ( Sharpsburg ) 17th September 1862

Timeline 11.30AM

Overview of the general situation looking North.

Image

The Confederate sunken lane position has collapsed and the remnants are being pursued by the Union Brigadier General William French's Third Division into the Piper cornfield.

Meanwhile, an emboldened Union Brigade from the First Division, Second Corps Major General Israel B. Richardson commanding, has attempted to outflank the Piper cornfield putting further pressure on this sector.

Major General Sumner is attempting to get his forces ‘ en potence’ along the Smoketown road, but with great difficulty, as a large section of his command melts away.

Image

A newly invigorated General Lafayette Mc Laws is carrying all before him as his Division tears into the retreating Union forces.

Image

General Lee oversees the redeployment of Confederate artillery to the Hagerstown Pike, overlooking the Piper farm in an attempt to stem the Union advance.

Image

Brigadier General Alfred Pleasanton has authorised an excursion across the Antietam creek middle bridge in order to assist the Union Third Divisions advance.

Union Cavalry under Captain SBM Young along with horse artillery support are moving along the Boonstown Pike, past the toll house towards the bridge.

Image

General Lee has few reserves left and a new assault on the Rhorbach bridge is beginning develop, to add to the pressure on his beleaguered command.

The pictures with this installment strike me as especially beautiful, Chris. Excellent work on the framing and the perspective. Also: it's nice to see McClellan's cavalry finally get involved. I gather "Young Napoleon" was much criticized in the battle's aftermath for not using his large force of cavalry (for reconnaissance, etc.) -- as well as for not using his massive reserves of infantry

Best,
John

Thank you to everyone for their kind comments, they are much appreciated.

John raises an interesting point.

Cavalry by this time if the war was becoming increasingly redundant on the battlefield as a sabre wielding shock force.

Scouting, harassing, delaying until the infantry turned up etc were the new tasks of the mounted arm.

McClellan, at Antietam, instead of using his cavalry for reconnaissance duties, concentrated his forces with a Napoleonic dash across the Middle bridge in mind. Thank fully for those about to be slaughtered, ala Light Brigade he was dissuaded.

The reserves of Sixth and Fifth Corps were held back as Pinkerton had convinced him that Lee had an enormous force waiting to attack him over the same bridge but in the opposite direction. In fact, Sixth Corps at 11.30 AM could have marched straight over the Middle bridge and gained the day.

However, Little Mac insisted that they continue their March to support the remains of 1st, 12th and 2nd Corps on his right flank.

Another lost opportunity by the master ditherer!

Best wishes,

Chris
