Republican Roman Mercenary Archers and Slingers

Posted by ells10 on 21 Feb 2021, 18:45

I understand that the Roman Army would preferably use Cretan archers, but to be honest I already have these for my Greek/Macedonian army, and I wanted to distinguish the Roman mercenaries from the Greek ones. To combat this, I used Newline Designs Maccabean archers and slingers, and by giving the archers all red tunics and the slingers red headbands, I felt it gave them a more roman appearance, what do you think?

I am no Roman expert, but I suspect that a little less uniformity may have been the norm for Roman auxiliaries? Having said that, I believe that both the dark red-brown and un-dyed cloth colours used here are authentic for Roman troops.

I am also not sure if these are the only archer and slinger poses available from Newline? Maybe some (small) bending of arms would create a little variety in pose? As an ex-archer myself, I know how difficult it is to draw and release in unison!

But otherwise, nicely-painted figures and with an effective backdrop for the photographs.

Totally agree with your comments, figures displayed were just put up together for a photo opportunity, when deployed they will be spread out on the flanks so it won't appear like a medieval formation were there trying to volley fire.

I think the red would fit very well with Romans, good to see an alternative take on Roman archers!

It's a good red color, and it does look quite Roman to me too.
