SYW Battle Fun

Posted by PaulRPetri on 20 Sep 2020, 17:30

Four of us were able to gather Saturday night in person to have a good old fashion wargame. I pulled out my SYW stuff, which is mounted for the rules Volley & Bayonet, Infantry & Cavalry regiments are mounted on 11/2 inch deep by 3 inch wide bases. Instead of using V&B I adapted the mass fantasy battle rules Kings of War using some Napoleonic varients I found on line. The senario was a simple thing, defend the hill. I was the Austrians defending the hill and the Prussians had to attack us and drive us off. My magnificent generaling skills came to the fore front and my forces were quick destroyed and put to rout. Oh well it was great fun anyway.

Magnificent, Paul. As you would expect from me, I poured over your photos trying to determine what conversions & modifications you made to create various Units Unattainable.

Prussian artillery crew: ACTA AWI?

I'm also very keen to make my battlefields look like the real thing. A WW2 battlefield should have dispersed & cowering figures for instance. Your battle looks amazingly like a SYW battle. I think rather than proscribing deployment, good rules should encourage & reward it.

At any rate, well done you.

Thanks Donald.
Yes the Prussian gunners are AWI.
For a mass fantasy battle rules set Kings of War was very simple and made both sides deploy in lines to gain max benefit. So it in a way resembles a SYW battle. I always enjoy trying out new gaming ideas. I did not get any shots of the Prussian cavalry charging and defeating the austrian musketeers after they beat the Austrian cavalry. Quite a feat of arms. Which I had no involvement in but stood by and watched!

Something non-gamers don't understand (I hope this doesn't sound patronising), is the possibility of something not going to plan.

In 9 instances, the infantry would empty those charging saddles & well & good. On the 10th, the cavalry charges home, unscathed because (as sometimes did happen), a rain squall dampened the powder, or the infantrymen panicked & fired high or whatever.

It's this degree of uncertainty that makes gaming fascinating.

I look forward to more SYW gaming photos. Oh HaT! Can't you see possibilities????

It's the culmination of all the hard work in seeing armies on the battlefield, very cool!

That's very very impressive. SYW figures are difficult to paint, you rarely see large and beautifully painted armies like these.

Looks like a very fun game! Great table and figures, thanks for sharing.

What is the use of the cubes next to the units?

Hello Edmund2019 the cubes are what I call "Death Dials". They keep track of how many hits the unit has sustained. I have ones that go to 12 and a few others that go to 16. I originally made them for Tactica an old ancients rules set from the late 1980's but they have come in handy many times for many different rules sets. The cube is the handle that allows the magnetic top, which has the grass on it, to turn to a new number, which is a piece of paper glued onto a metal washer.
