American Civil War

You don't do it under an entire army, do you?
I am your fan as you know.

i remember the eye strain involved in painting masses of small figures.

I shied away from the Civil war for the sole reason of having to do so many figures of the same color uniforms. I mention this because your work rises above the blue/gray/butternut color schemes. At a glance they may look the same colors but you have so many subtle touches and have mastered working within those color parameters. You make them exciting to look at is what I'm trying to say. I would love to ask you to describe your painting technique if you don't mind.

Thank you very much for your kind words…

Bessiere…

Even making smartly uniformed units, I always use several shades. This is how it works in real world. Different manufacturers produce different tints for the same colour. Tints fade differently depending on exposure to the Sun, dirt, rain, washing… Many years ago, I was making a movie about the French expedition to Egypt. French blue uniforms turned into a kind of bluish grey shade just after three weeks exposed to the strong desert Sun. After five months hardly kept any trace of their old blue colour. White pants soon become of a sort of light yellowish ochre.
My point is that any fielded regiment, except ceremonial units or on parade, look non uniformed. Not to mention that soldiers take personal choices and customise his gear or wear it following their preferences.

I’m already working on four Union regiments non clad in dark blue uniforms :-D

By the way, just know I noticed that the US marines’ flag is wrong. I’ll have to repaint the blue square with the right pattern.

Take care…

Hi…

Some more bases for my ACW stuff…

These are a couple of CS Napoleons. The guns come from the old Esci set. Very simplified for today’s standards. I bought a lot of Speira guns, so I will try to show them here the soonest I can paint some. Figures are the usual mix of everything available, from old to new releases. The gunner with ramrod and bucket is Speira's, as you probably noticed…

Thanks for watching and I hope you are all well.

Joan

Very nice and beautifully painted.

You need a vent man to prevent the loaders from committing potential suicide!

There is a lovely ‘feel’ of the time to your works.

Best wishes,

Chris

Very nice artillery and a fine mix of figures from all brands, like allways. I think the Speira guns will update your armies for sure. So keep up the good. work. Btw: I have tried to identify the guns. Are they from Italeri? Because ESCI did not produced ACW artillery ;-) (should not be dogmatically  )

Hi…

Yes Mabo, you’re absolutely right, these guns are from Italeri’s sets, not Esci.
Tank you very much for pointing it up.

In a few days I am going to post the Yankee counterpart: three guns instead (two Italeri’s models and one from Speira) , because most of federal batteries were made of six guns while the confederate one’s had mostly just four guns.

Thanks for watching and your positive feedback and comments.
I do apologize for not being very active lately but the little time I have I rather prefer to use it painting and posting that chatting… Sorry for that.

Hi…

The yankee artillery…

Mix of figures with a couple of Speira included and two Parrot guns from Italeri and a Three Pounder Ordinance from Speira.

Bought a lot of Speira guns, mostly fortress, naval and siege, that I’m going to add here little by little…

Many thanks for your time and I hope you’re all right.

Joan
