Anglo-Zulu War 1879

Posted by despertaferro on 21 Feb 2019, 16:12

Hi...!

Zulus goes first... 8)

Using all the figures available (Esci, ACTA, and Hat's Married and Unmarried sets) I made it three Zulu Amabutho out of them: the uKhandempemvu (Hat's Unmarried figures), the uMxapho (Mostly Hat's Married figures with some ACTA and a few Esci) and the iNgobamakhosi (Mostly Esci's figures with some ACTA). Zulu regiments (ibutho) had diferents sizes, but for now I make all of them with the same number of bases/figures: 8 bases with 3 figures for raw warriors and 1 base with 6 figures for Command.

You know that normally I like mixing figures from different sets and try to make the differences not too noticeable. But this time I grouped the figures with their own. I did it because the sizes are way too different (the Hat's Unmarried figures does not seem human, nor size, neither proportions) and the Esci's being inaccurate and too flamboyant... But I'm quite satisfied with the final outcome...

This is the first time that I paint so many figures, 90, on just one go... And I think it is going to be the last... :xd:

Many thanks for your time!

Really fantastic! 90 figures of that quality would probably take me longer than 90 days to complete. Much longer.

Wow! Great work! Hmm, depending on the look of them it's no wonder they aren't married! 90 figures?!?!?! Massive!!!

I'm impressed by your work as usual. But I think that light (white) parts should be a bit more bright.
Can't wait to see British soldiers.

The white parts were whiter before despertaferro hit them with his world-famous wash/glaze.

Thank you very much for paying attention to my postings and your always kind and constructive feedback...

How white, white must be... ;-)
It is not the first time we talk about this matter here...

Dear Kekso, I think you're right... Whit the dark skin tone of these guys and being almost naked, a brighter shade of white would certainly increase the contrast and add a bit of brightness to this dull subject. Moreover, when all the garments they wore are made of animal skin and fur or ostrich feathers, again, just black and white, probably the final outcome could be far more eye-catching...
In the other hand, there is not pure white on nature (maybe except snow...) and if you grab a bird's white plume you'll see how yellow it is... But I see your point and I'll try to improve for my next paintings...

Thank you very much!

I think that is just a matter of taste and not who's right or wrong.
Sorry I didn't said that in my first post.

There's white and there's white. I think when you say pure white you're refering to a modern blue white which is really no more white than a yellow white, although the yellow white may be pure white but it looks yellow because the blue isn't in it :eh:

Very good, you may want to add to your Zulu army when you see Germania`s upcoming range.

These figures look really good, I like those realistic colors very much!

About the white: I always think that the bright colors shown in uniform tables etc. are some sort of ideal that wouldn't persist very long under field conditions. IMHO even the purest white should become quickly a shade of the kind that you have used here, when worn during a longer campaign.

Hi...

Today I came from work earlier that I thought and I got the chance of taking some quick pictures of my latest work before the daylight was gone...

These are two British Infantry Battalions, from the 24th and the 90th Regiments . The 24th Regiment for iSandlwana and the 90th Light Infantry Regiment for Khambula.

As usual, figures from all the available sets: Esci, ACTA and two from Hat.

I hope you like them and many thak's for passin by...

In my opinion your troops have a real campaign ‘feel’ to them that elevates them, especially en masse to something special.

I am looking forward to seeing them in action.

Best wishes,

Chris

Yes, they really look like they're in the middle of a battle and the mix of poses on the stands and realistic bases gives them a very lively, authentic look.

Very nicely painted figures. I like the dulled colours very much, and also the litle bases are very well made with grass and stones.
