Napoleonic French supply wagon

Posted by Bill Slavin on 22 Aug 2018, 14:31

This was a really fine kit I picked up at a backwoods toy soldier shop bizarrely located only about 5 km from where I live! I think the store owner told me that it was no longer available, which is a pity. The kit has horses for two wagons, but only one wagon is included and enough of the two sitting figures to hold a very boring dinner party, but I liked the effect and plan to trail this around after my French army in all future games and to no obvious purpose!

As with all your stuff it looks very good, but it's the background that makes it really good!

I agree with Gunnar about background. I also like resting soldiers.

This kit is one of the best still on the market place. It sure looks the Bee`s Knee`s as my friend blucher1815red would say. Well done from little o`ll me. Just one little thought , horse reins would certainly enhance it. BB

Thanks, all.
A good point about the reins, BB. Being a frugal gamer I have thoughts of repurposing this wagon for other nationalities if a scenario calls for transport, so the driver is unattached to his seat (well rubber cement) so he can be replaced with a different driver and as a result reins would be problematic.

A classic set in the meantime. I like this version of you. The HaT-Sets are quite nice, but unfortunately out of scale in my oppinion.

IF I was to do reins, I would use a heavy gauge thread coated in white glue. But I'm sure there are better suggestions out there. Looking forward to seeing your results, Andrew!

Great work as always, Bill! With your attention to detail I can well believe you've got a whole scene painted up in side the wagon.

Great painting on the wagon and the canvas cover looks totally realistic. same goes for the canvas shako covers.

Your buildings are excellent as usual but I've just noticed the wheat sheaves leaning against them. They look really good.

When I bothered to make reins (it was long time ago), I always used metal tube of creams, toothpastes, mayonnaise, etc. They can be cut very thin and and folded as you like without much risk of braking it.

If you wanted more wagons,
it is possible to scratch build this type of supply wagon out of paper card, if like me one has a stash of old wheels, and horses. Well I never chuck anything away and over the years it fills up empty match boxes as if they were time capsules.

Image

Replaced a broken HAT Wheel. Yes they most certainly do rot!

The canvas top cover can be made from screwed up paper soaked in a simple colour wash and overlaid and stuck on a form that fits snug onto and into the tiny oblong wagon box. Simple A 4 size paper will do,and with the process of screwing up and undoing it a few times it becomes quite soft with lots of good looking defined wrinkles.

With your ability to make your own buildings which stand in the background i foresee no great problem if at a later stage you made up one or a few. If one has no horses no problem either, just park them up. I made a few many years ago, and really they cost nothing at all. BB
