Gordon meets the Mahdi

Posted by Santi Pérez on 23 Jan 2018, 22:38

Hello everybody.

Finally I have managed to finish the diorama. :sweatdrop:

I've got already the painted figures before Christmas, but I spent my holidays in mounting them onto the base and adding the landscape elements. And I haven't found enough spare time for taking pictures till now.

But here you have the result. These two first pictures are an advance of the many more that will follow.

But I must go step by step...and the first step will be for the figures.

To be continued. :winky:

I agree. Your style is very clean an top notch! Only the white and the fur of the camel need some shading and highlighting.

I am not sure white and camel fur require shading. I mean, it would stop being your painting style. I like as it is: Santi's style. And this one remind me of Tin-Tin comics. I like it a lot

Very prolix (prolijo) work.
I like the style, in a real view, at "raw eyes" in 1/72, the effect use to be wonderful cause each small detail is clear.
Gordon is my favourite in that group. :yeah:

I would not say so. I like his style very much, that is why I only suggested to work a bit on the fur and the white. The rest looks nice without too much highligting but white needs something to "break it up" when painted in big surfaces. I think it would improve the style...

I like a lot! The problem for me (which is no problem at all) is that the ESCI-figures look like Hat-figures! Like both companies. Very nice work!

Thank you very much for your comments, praises and criticisms, dear friends Wiking, Ben90, Mr.Andrea, Carlos, Susofrick and Kostis. :-)

I take note of your advice, Ben90. I have tried that on white sometimes in the past but I didn't get the expected results. This is the reason of why I decided to use a light grey undercoat, covering it with several layers of white (less layers on the depressions and more on the reliefs).

Thank you, Mr.Andrea. I'm very proud of my own style, developed throughout more than 40 years. I also think that it's very distinctive from me and makes it different from others'. ;-)

Well, as promised, now it's the time for the painted figures. First of all, let's remember how my project began and how it looks now, once finished:

And let's remember also how the white-primed figures looked in my last post in the "Work in Progress" section, and how they look once painted, front and back all together:

In the next post I will go on with more detailed pictures of individual figures.

Thanks for watching. :-)

Great scene, Santi! I like the end product very much. Reminds me of the scene in the film featuring Charlton Heston. :-D

And I'm proud to use the same bottle tops as you for my painting...

One question Santi: which white paint do you use?

That was also my inspiration when I projected this diorama for the first time, Marvin. And don't forget the splendid role played also by Laurence Olivier as the Mahdi. Fortunately the Waterloo 1815 figure is a faithful portrait of Gordon/Heston. ;-)

I think they are ideal for this purpose...and I have to give some use to all the Coca-Cola bottles I drink (now only the zero caffeine/zero calories version due to stomach and weight problems :( ).

Mr.Andrea wrote:

I always use Vallejo Model Color acrylics except for metallics, which are from Citadel/Games Workshop. This white colour in particular is the reference "70.951 - White".

Thank you, fellows. Best regards. :-)

I also love the work you do before you start painting. :yeah: :-D

Kostis wrote:

Thank you, Kostis. But I must confess that it's not as easy as it seems. When you see in a finished figure two adjacent areas in different colours separated by a straight and clear line, this is usually the result of applicating several layers of paint in both sides of the line covering each time the excess of paint from the opposite side. Fortunately the final effect justifies the effort applicated.

Another confession: I enjoy more the previous stage of preparing and converting the figures tan the last step of painting them. ;-)

Best regards, my admired friend Kostis. :notworthy:

Here are more images, they are now general views of the complete diorama. I took the pictures with two different cameras and two different lights, so you can choose which of them look better. ;-)

I finally found some free time to put some detailed pictures of the diorama. As previous ones, these were taken with two different cameras and lights in order to achieve the best results (although I don't know which are the best ones  ).

As I don't want to bore you anymore, these are the last pictures that I post.
They are again detailed views of it. The last ones are dedicated to the vegetation used: all are real dried plants collected in the streets and parks of my city.
