Napoleonic Neapolitans

Posted by Rosbif on 12 Jul 2017, 07:22

Hi all,

Finally got some time to do a bit more painting! In my ongoing painting of Murat's forces for the Battle of Tolentino, I've painted the 1st battalion of the 7th Infantry Regiment, famously recruited from Caribbean refugees from Saint Domingue. Apparently Napoleon foisted them onto his brother when Joseph was still the king of Naples because they were the worst regiment in the French army. Without any improvement, they became the best regiment in the Neapolitan army. Says a lot about the quality of the army of Naples!

I was a bit lazy about trimming the mould lines off the legs of these figures, which show up fairly prominently in this photo , but for wargaming they are more than adequate.

I've also painted a couple of command stands for my Neapolitan forces using Franznap's characterful figures

Good to see a Napoleonic unit that's a bit out of the ordinary. And they are splendidly painted too.

HE's BACK!!!! Yes in all caps! Glad to see new work, as I am a fan. As I have mentioned multiple times I like this set even given the shortcomings of the chins. Very much like the unit you represent and the painting you have applied!

 Stop it, you're making me blush! :xd:

Seriously though, thanks for the kind words. I haven't been very active this year so far and want to make up for lost time. My Neapolitan project is restarting after a couple of entertaining games at the club. I want to bolster my collection with the remaining units from the Tolentino order of battle which will include Franznap's wonderful Murat figure.

These look fantastic, as always with your work. A really interesting unit to tackle and I think the mould lines here are just looking like trouser seams.

Perhaps it says more about Buonoparte's later memoirs ;-)

He also the Saxons were rubbish troops and Bernadotte was a poor Marshal. He said it after 1813 though, not before :-D

Never mind the mould lines - this is quality and they look great.

I thought Neopolitan troops would have worn a mixture of pink, brown and cream? ;-)

Except the strawberry ice cream always gets left for last. Unless Dad's Army is encamped in the vicinity.

I'm planning to paint a little known unit, the 1 ° reggimento di venditori di gelato. I've found an image of their supply train vehicles....

Finally done a bit more work on my Neapolitan project. Hobby stuff seems to be taking place at a glacial pace this year!

The Velites and Command figures all by the wonderful Franznap, while the Voltiguers of the Guard are mainly HaT elite figures with head swaps.
