Vistula Legion Lancers

Posted by Bill Slavin on 25 Jun 2017, 02:03

Having written a scenario for the battle at Tudela, Spain, my summer project is to pull together the units I still need in order to field the two sides. One of those will be the Vistula Legion Lancers, Poles who fought with distinction in Spain and elsewhere with Napoleon's forces.
A few more pics can be found here on my blog : http://tinywarsplayedindoors.blogspot.ca

Great painting. These blue, white, yellow troops.
The last pic show me for the first time in 1/72 protected fire arms with cloths.
To the mechanic and the open end.
:yeah:
There is one Franconian in these Vistula Legion Lancer group. The one with the red, white belly band. :-D
Is there a reason why the guy behind him get no red dot under his white feather?

Dear Bill,

Your lancers look excellent. Good painting work.

Also I visited your blog, something I should do more often. Your quality of game-landscaping is so high. :yeah: :-D My compliments for that. I enjoy that a lot.

There is not so many people as successful as you are by building temporary landscapes with home made separate scenery elements. Main factor is your excellent use of soft tones in the greenery, all somewhere between green, brown and sand yellow. And the hills placed UNDER your tablecloth instead of on top of them. I love it a lot.
I discovered some very nice 'Peninsula' houses too.

Very nice! But I have to ask, where do your buildings come from?

I am sure he builds all of them himself. :yeah: :-D :notworthy:
You can see the cross sections of his walls are paper covered foamboard.
The roof tiles and relief rims on the walls must be cardboard, plastered with some kind of putty.

A darn good setting to place any style of figure.
Splendid painting style too.
The Scratch Building certainly gets my Vote. BB

Thanks all.
The building are scratchbuilt, foam core with a papier mashé mash applied to the walls for texture, trim is cardboard strips. Tiled roofs are just a fine corrugated cardboard, with ridges pressed flat.

Hi Bill.

Following the thread I also investigated further your blog.

The Tilly setting is lovely. I can only image how even more fabulous your settings would be if you had a sand table.

I am lucky that the wife, Der Feldmarschall tolerates my hobby and on occasion helps with research.

You have some lovely conversions on display but the feel of your French re fight is spot on in my opinion.

Best wishes,

Chris

Like the other gentlemen, I would say everything is great in these pics. But my personal favorite is how you have handled the parts painted in yellow - a really difficult color when painting uniforms, I think.

Nice figures!!
Legion Vistula is known also in my city (Zaragoza/Saragossa) they had hard times against the local patriots in 1808 /09 :)

Yes, Zaragoza handed it to the French quite spectacularly. Mostly raw levies beating off some of France's best. Not the only time Napoleon and his marshals underestimated the tenacity of the Spanish people...

I add to the chorus of admiration. What colour yellow are you using? And I'm really liking the horses too!

Hi Marvin,

The yellow is just dollar store paints, so not much help. An undercoat of reddy brown, a golden yellow lemony yellow mix on top and some high lights of a light lemony yellow.
