Nappy Cavalry Project #23 - Russian Lifeguard Dragoons

Posted by Marvin on 04 May 2017, 20:33

Greetings all!

Thought I'd tackle Zvezda's Russian Dragoons for the latest cavalry regiment in my project. At 3 figures a box, it requires the purchase of a number of boxes to put together some sort of regiment. The figures come in parts that snap-together with pegs for the horses to attach to the bases. Perhaps I'm a bit clumsy but I found it all a bit of a challenge. :stressed:

The sculpting as always from Zvezda is excellent though the detail is so very subtle it can make painting them rather tricky. :sweatdrop:

I've painted the prestigious Lifeguard Dragoon regiment. Some photos are below with a little history and more on the blog.

Cheers! Marvin

The face on the rider in the second photograph is eerily good. All of these dragoons came out looking fantastic. Which vallejo model colors did you mix together to achieve the yellowish gold of the helmet eagle symbols?

Thanks fella. I mainly use Vallejo Brass for the helmets with just a tiniest touch of gold mixed in to lift the colour a little.

Marvin--

The more I see of your work, the more I admire your painting style. I would like to improve my painting by emulating some of your techniques. What type of brush do you use for dry-brushing?

Thanks Bluefalchion :-D ... the answer is I use a range of brushes for dry-brushing. I use broad flat brushes for first highlights or large areas like horse flesh, and then I might use a smaller, stubby one like he one on the right for detail (extra lighter highlights on elbow creases, etc.).

Keep experimenting with bold or more subtle contrasts and fine the result that's right for you. Best of luck and don't forget we want to see the results on the BFF gallery!

Dear Marvin,

Great work and good indications for dry brush technic.

Zvezda Russian dragoons suggests me a question for all the forumers: do any of us know why this excellent manufacturer has changed its range of production, choosing the current trend of sets with few subjects for a sproportionate price?

Thanks Giovanni

Very nice painting job indeed.
I admit I'm sad to see Zvezda moving away from big boxes to go into wargaming -based sets with much fewer figures.
That said, the small sets are superbly done, and this contribution highlights their quality.
The shading work is just superb: the uniforms look like they're the genuine thing.
Again, cudos.

Did I read somewhere that Zvezda are not making any more 1/72 scale sets of any kind? As long as Marvin paints at least one of all Nappie cavalry figs they produced, we will have something to look forward to.

Beautiful Painting Marvin.

The Zvevda, large boxed sets were the golden days of painting in this hobby.
A few boxes are to be found on Model Hobbies, as I type this.
Smaller sets why? ____ Less cost! ____ Lots of money gained. ______ Fewer workers needed.
However they threw away their first place on the market place.
So their awful gain was also their greatest world wide loss. BB

Ah yes, I knew about this. Fact is - the red border on the saddle cloth was to tricky! After a few attempts it ended up looking a bit rubbish so I shamelessly compromised and stuck with plain yellow.
