I found this and it clearly portrays that at times he would hold his pipe in his left hand.

I was thinking more - How do you defend against an attack from a pipe wielding cavalryman if you can't be sure which hand it's in? :eh:

These chappies had a completely different outlook on life/ death than most of us.
