Roman Castrum - Contubernium tent, figures and accessories

Posted by Phersu on 13 Aug 2013, 18:51

I finally finished to paint the first home made test castings of the Roman Legionary camp tent.
The set is now in production, and hopefully will be released and available from next autumn-winiter...

Within few days I will show the tent with figures and accessories on the minidiorama.

Thank you my friends, the minidiorama is done too!

Probably the scenario is too plenty of free space and the figures and accessories too spread around to look realistic...
Usually legion camps were much more crowded... tents, soldiers and equipments were much closer and concentrated in small areas... but this diorama is meant to be a presentation of the set, squeezing everything in a smaller area wouldn't allow to see well all the items. For the same reason the figures are all facing frontwards.
Another questionable particular is the weapons rack with pilum javelins and shields... while weapons like most equipments used to have its own proper storage tent... but also in this case the items wouldn't be visible if placed inside a tent... and I suppose there was also some handy racks where to place weapons and equipment outside for a short time.

This is a beautiful scene, showing nicely what can be done with these figures. With respect to space, I think its OK to show the whole scene in a rather generous layout.
Actually, in reality the tents were quite close to each other, leaving just enough space to the left and right for the guy-ropes of two adjacent tents. In front of the tents, there would have been much more space available in the form of a broad road. But I suspect that officers would have seen that these were not crammed with all sorts of stuff, at least during campaign, given that these roads served for the quick movement of troops within the camp. But then there was still an even larger strip of land behind the rows of tents, and there you would expect all these activities as shown in your diorama.
