The Battle of Steinbuch Heights; SYW

Posted by Ochoin on 27 Jan 2026, 04:30

Autumn 1761 – Hesse-Kassel
A large Austrian force, seeking a breakthrough near Minden, has marched on the key landmark of Steinbruch Heights. A smaller, hardened Prussian army moves to intercept. Reinforcements for both sides are racing to the field.

Using our 'A Glorious War' rules, we fought out this encounter battle.
On the Austrian left flank, the Pandours seized a wood & were supported at this choke point by Grenz Horse and grenadiers:

In a series of frenziedattacks, Prussian skirmishers, cavalry & infantry ere unable to fight their way through.

On the Austrian right flank, a desperate cavalry clash ended with the Austrians battered but triumphant:

But it was in the centre where the battle was decided. Holding the high ground, volleys of musket fire & artillery shot drove the attacking Prussians back:

The Austrians were left with possession of the field:

Great stuff Donald as always especially since it was posted on my Birthday!!!

I am getting ready for the annual Seven Years War association convention which is this April, so this was very inspiring. I am going to run Zorndorf again using Volley & Bayonet rules. See how this works out. I hope to take pictures and perhaps post here if I get enough pictures..

Happy birthday, Paul. Thanks for the kind comments. I always like to hear about the convention - if only I could attend! Any photos will be most definitely welcome.

I will very definitely get some photos. We have as a keynote speaker Alexander Mikaberidze. We also have the Seven Years War Inc Reenactors group joining us and will have period uniforms and equipment on display plus a six pounder. Warlord games is also going to turn up. Should be a good time.

I see a lot of painting conversions and also some really cool officers. Thanks for sharing. I always like to see the reports from the tabletop.
