Bagradas - Ancients' solo game

Posted by Ochoin on 09 Jan 2026, 01:31

Unexpectedly, I found myself with some spare time & decided to solo play one of the scenarios I've stockpiled: "The Plains of the Bagradas".
This would pit my Successor Greeks against the Carthaginians in Sicily. "Hail Caesar" were the rules of choice.
The Carthaginians were on "auto-pilot":
eg At the start of each Carthaginian turn, roll 1D6 per division:#1 Hold position, dress lines, reform etc With some modifiers eg Modifiers: +1 if enemy is within 12”
The Carthos deployed first.

A strong centre under Hasdrubal:

And Korbus' Iberians on the left flank:

The Greeks had a strong centre with Phalanx, elephants & artillery under Leonnatus:

And, noticeably, a cavalry reserve under Agis:

The battle did not go well for the Carthaginians - their cavalry were routed:

Though thingswere a little better for the Iberians who pushed back the Greek Spears & Thureophori:

But the battle was decided in the centre:
Scythed Chariots breaking Punic infantry:

And the phlanx slowly getting on top:

But the final straw was when the Greek cavalry punched through the hole left by the Carthaginian elephants & hit the Punic infantry in the flank:
