Battle for the Purple

Posted by Ochoin on 12 Oct 2025, 14:16

I tried out my new Late Antiquity rules today - a Roman civil War scenario with Late Romans & various Huns & Goths on both sides.
The game went smoothly - fast, furious & very bloody.

By the end, out of 32 units on the table, 19 were routed/destroyed. 4 out of 6 commanders lay dead (they were compulsorily & permanently attached to units & when their unit crumbled, they died).

A few tweaks needed - the archery is a bit too strong & morale needs to be a bit more wobbly - but these issueswill be easily remedied.

I only took photos after the battle was over & relatively empty. Decius, the usurper looks to be heading for Rome & the 'purple'.

I really like Late Roman Armies. Must have been a cool game.

Next time don't forget to take pictures before starting the battle. ;-)

I've had most of the figures for some time & have tried to use them with various rule sets - nothing quite gelled.
I am pleased I finally have rules, figures & period come together.

Lots more games & probably a campaign in the future.

Donald,
with new sets for the period and displays such as yours the Dark ages become bright.
Great game and lots of nice figures - mostly metal from the look of it.
It is nice that we now have also good figures in plastic (Redbox, Linear A, some Strelets + older Miniart and Hat).
Greetings
Michael

Michael, what nice sentiments you've expressed & I thank you for them. Let us not forget that the standards & inspiration provided by Bennos forum & many of its talented denizens is what has influenced me.

Yes, many tumbling dice & some Newline but also HaT & Strelets in these armies. Like you, I'm a fan of locating & using figures from as widespread a net as I can cast.

Lovely units, nice painting and a real ‘feel’ to the board. Those houses look straight out of my recent visit to Italy.

Best wishes,

Chris
