General Wargaming

A Dark Ages army

My small SAGA late Saxon army.
You'll notice that there's a lot of figures (about 120)......I have no restraint!

Image
Huscarls & Leaders to the front, Select Fyrd (didn't exist, evidently), flanked by archers in the second line & General Fyrd (as per previous comment) at the rear. To the left is the possibly mythical Saxon cavalry.

My hand painted flags are a feature (I wish!)

The arguable cavalry

Massed archers (maybe this *is* a fantasy army???)

Some of the "crazies".

Thanks for the kind comment.

I know from looking at your excellent medieval figures, you appreciate painting numbers of non-uniform figures.
I actually prefer uniformed armies: from Napoleonics to ww2 but a mass of figures all wearing different colours definitely has a look.

My ACW Confederates whilst being a bit of a pain to paint, look pretty swish in a multitude of grey & butternut colours.

Over on the HaT forum, there was a discussion about washes. I'm not pretending my Saxons would win painting prizes but I dug them out to illustrate some points for a Newbie.

Thanks for your kind words.

Yeah these are great looking Saxons, and washes are the magic cure-all for everything lol. My own technique kind of developed without them but I think they look and work great!

Dark Age armies really come into their own with mix and match. One sculptors long skinny blokes, alongside another's little stumpy ones brings a warband to life. Even different takes on shields and weapons adds, not detracts from the look of the thing...
in my 'umble opinion.
