WWI 100th A.G.B.: The Surreys play the game / FINISHED!

Hi Folks!

Watching the movie "Legends of the Fall" recently I saw the quite odd scene when a Canadian soldier kicks a football toward the German lines. I also remembered a flat figure diorama with the title "The Surreys play the game", showing a similar scene. Doing some research at the Internet I found this site here and saw that this really happend in 1916 at the Somme, when the 8th Battalion of the East Surrey regiment kicked footballs while attacking the German trenches.

This will be a small scene in 28mm scale to show this strange event, when sports and war met each other.

Doing some "unpleasant" work before the painting process can start.

cleaning up flash and mould lines


removing the bases (always a problem for pewter figs in dioramas)


drilling holes and setting brass pins into the figs for better fixing on the ground plate

First "test painted" figure, painted with different brown / khaki tones (mostly Vallejo and Tamiya).

Hi, not my period, but I love the paintwork on the rifleman, the shading & colour tones are fab, the Lee Enfield looks brilliant.

Another pic, showing the painting steps for flesh painting.


1. dark flesh color over black base
2. medium flesh color
3. lights in bright flesh color
4. further lights in pale flesh color
5. final lights in extreme pale flesh color
6. blending all together with ogryn flesh wash from Citadel (sorry for the bayonet in the face).
7. adding some detail like eyes (where it fits) and reddish color for the lips.

I have finished painting work on the figures. I have used different "home made" greenish and brownish khaki tones to get some variety to the figs.

I have finished the diorama. I didn´t take much photos of that process. But it was very easy and done in one or two painting / building sessions.



1. Cut out a thick quadratic piece of styrofoam (Styrodur) with a hot wire cutter.
2. Melt an uneven and heavy shelled surface with a soldering iron.
3. Add a coat of wood filler, mixed with sand and small stones
4. Paint everything in black or dark brown (I used an airbrush for this work)
5. Drybrush the ground work with different shades of brown
6. Add pigments for more reality
7. Add grass tufts and details like barb wire (1/48 photo etched from Verlinden)
8. Glue on the figs (it was very easy with the long nails attached to their feet, just stick the figs into the foam ground with a bit of white glue)

This is the result. Photos done yesterday at high noon outside.

WOW man, this is amazing Ground work is great as dynamics of scene too... Like you caught split second of real battle with a photo camera
