Posted by dykio on 29 Oct 2012, 12:45

Hi Guys,

In the past i used all kind of different stuff to base my figures but sice a while i use just these 4 kind of bases. So for those who are interested here is a very basic base tutorial. Hope there are some usefull tips in it.

Step 1
I use MDF for the base and make some cuts in the surface so the plaster stays on better

Step 2
Put on some plaster

Step 3
Finishing the base. I have 4 different types of bases :

wasteland/mountain area.(Mordor/moria etc)
Glue the base, stick some stones on it andd cover the rest of the base with sand
Let it dry, paint the base grey just cheap wallpaint and drybrush with light grey

Dessert look (Harad)
Glue the base, stick some stones on it and cover the rest with sand (sounds familiair)
Let it dry, paint the base yellow brown (again cheap paint) and drybrush with white

Grass (Rohan-ish)
I use brown paint mixed with water and sand and while still wet just push it into the "grass"

And generic flatland (the shire-ish)
Again i paint the base brown mixed with paint, then glue small stones on it, and then sprenkle with sand and flock. Let dry paint the rocks grey and drybrush them. (for a better result you can when everything is really dry !! drybrush it with soe light brown. This gives the gras a more natural look)

And offcourse u can experiment with all kinds of different materials...

Excellent tutorial. Thanks. Wasteland and desert are my favourite.
Just one thing... maybe I'm wrong but I think you use HDF, not MDF.
