The Dutch tradition of miniatures

Posted by sberry on 25 Jun 2017, 15:20

Today I found in my newspaper a report on a current exhibition in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The exhibition is called Small Wonders and shows so-called micro carvings from around 1500 AD, i.e. whole complex scenes carved into small pieces of wood that are only a few centimeters big.
Fascinating, and it shows how the Dutch miniatures tradition, so nicely represented by this forum, goes back 500 years!

Dear sberry,

Thank you so much for telling us. I did not know yet.
I understand our Museum borrowed and present some objects from your Berlin museum too.
The Rijksmuseum is close to my house, I have a free entry card and will go there soon (unless the ever expanding masses of tourists will prevent me from getting inside)

There was surely a 10 year gap in that free ticket place, because the museum was closed to the public for 10 years?

Gunnar, if Remco,is older,______________than i must be the ancient of days? BB

There surely is a reason why people talk about the famous Dutch Old Masters.

Same problem over here. I once thought it might be a clever idea to visit the museums early in the morning, right after they open their gates. Big mistake - that's the time when the busloads and the school classes arrive. In the afternoon, things are more relaxed, I have learned.

I thought old meant that they lived a long time ago.
