WWI Museums in Belgium - Looking for tips

Posted by MABO on 17 Jun 2013, 21:48

Hello all!

This weekend I am going on a trip to the beautiful city of Brügge. From there a friend of mine and me would like to visit some museums of WWI. We know that there is one in Ypern which must be interesting. But does somebody has another tip or idea for a tour that is based in Brügge??

Thanks in advance!

Jan,

the museum in the first link looks very interesting, but I didn't visit this one yet.

This one I visited and I was very impressed. The command and first aide post under the church/chapel is worth a visit.

The tower at Diksmuide and the trenches of death are interesting to.

And The Flanders field museum at Ieper of course!

I wish you a pleasant visit  and I hope you will post a lot of pictures here ;-)

Ups, I have forgotten to write a short report.

First of all: Thank you for the tips, Peter!

WWI is a new historical topic for me. I have known some general things about this conflict but not much more. So it was important to get a interesting point to start, which was the Flanders Field Museum at Ieper (Ypern). Very big, very modern and very good.

The http://www.hoogecrater.com/en/war-museum reminds me of some of the Museums in the Normandy: Everything one can found in the earth is represented witp puppets in uniforms, some models and small 1/1 "Dioramas". But is was full of things so interesting as well.

This is very good as well. Most important: The reconstruction of a base under the earth you can walk through.

The tower at Diksmuide and the trenches of death are interesting, too. The tower mostly if you want to know some things about the Flemish and the Walloons.

We saw some other things I can not write down completely but...

Finally: It was a week-end full of informations with a nice stay in our home-base Brugges. I will not buy figs for this period but I would like to see some more, some other day.

;-)
