French Chasseur A Cheval?

Posted by kit95 on 26 Feb 2009, 10:00

Does the elites of the mounted chassuers ride with the others?
If they do, do they mix up themselves or the elites ride at the flanks?

Hey kit, I don't really understand what you're asking here? Can you explain a little bit more?

If by 'élite' you mean the élite company usually wearing busbies (colpacks) instead of shakos, as the 1st company of the 1st squadron they were placed on the first place right side when the squadron was formed into line. When the squadron was formed into column (colonne) the élite company would take the lead.

They were never mixed with the others because they were formed into a seperate company. Hope that helps.

If you are looking for more detailed reference of how company and squadron formations looked like you might have a look at the diagrams on page 29 in:

Bukhari, Emir: Napoleon's Line Chasseurs, London: Osprey 1977 (Men-at-Arms; [68])

There, positions of all the officers, NCOs, trumpeters and rankers are given.

I meant:
Does the colpacks ride with the Shakos or they lead the charge or falnk the shakos?

I want to make a small dio about chasseurs charging, so if i put the officer, flag and trumpeter in the middle and the normals (shakos) in rows of 2 or three behind, is it right?

Kit, I am very sorry, but I don't understand your question.

I understand you are talking about the élite company. Within that company everyone would wear a colpack if the company was equipped with colpacks, which was not always the case. Sometimes élite companies would also wear the shako, marked with a red plume or the like.

So what is the point of your question?

As to the position of the company within the squadron look at my former posting.

When attacking, the positions of officers, standard bearers and trumpeters were different from what you are showing. They would not normally ride in front of the company.
