Sculpting and casting

Posted by Paul on 22 Sep 2012, 14:51

There are a lot of sculptors here, who, when they show thier work, almost invariably get asked wether the sculpts will be re-produced.
I´m not 100% up on the re-production side of sculpting, the mold making and casting, but I know it costs a bit of money, often more than a single person can afford.
Would there be, if a reliable casting service could be found, interest in people putting money towards having sets created? ..a sort of joint venture thing to help sculptors of small ranges to get thier sculpts re-produced.

like the idea
there are a couple of casting services, some only do full molds but there are guys that sell parts of molds that keeps the cost for a single or a couple of figures down, it does take longer to get cast as the rest of the mold needs to be sold as well

http://tablewarfare.com/shared-moulds-f ... atures.htm
to give you a basic idea

I have not used them myself (dont need it), but I have send a couple of guys there info and they where very happy with them, that was for wargamers that wanted unique figures

Brilliant!!! So there´s the mold maker...all that´s required is people to put thier sculpts forward and a group who would be interested in part paying to get the set made.
I´d be into giving it a try..I´ve already done so for one set....Anyone else ?

You are talking about figures that are not sold to the public, right?

Should we vote on some poll and see a set(?) of figures that would interest the most?

Yes, sets that are not (at the moment) sold to the public, or could be sold within the forum to members (?)
I had the idea because there are some good sculptors here, they show thier work and people ask wether it will be made into a set. This is too expensive for a single person to risk getting the molds made and no-one wants them, or better said, not enough to cover his/her costs.
Basically it would be a bit like cloud funding...each contributer of money would get a set for free and the rest would hopefully be sold to either fund the costs and maybe..just maybe act as a start up fund for future sets so the initial outlay per funder would shrink until profit could be made.

A poll would be a good idea, similar to the one Erik did for "which set next"
Any ideas?
For me, I would have interest in virtually every period, not so much WWII or napoleonics but even then, if the set was original and the "promise" that the sculptor would do other sets, I personally would consider funding anything.

sounds good

maybe Alex has some figures waiting to be published... some sci-fi perhaps.. and figures could be his share in this joint venture?

and the initial funding need... :? but it's a yes from me too!

(just suggesting)
Erik said he would do them next, but maybe someone here has any ideas for these, which were the most voted on that poll...

I take it we are talking resin or metal here - I gather that moulds for plastics are far more expensive.

For Resin , I could offer the casting.

There are no cost for moulds, but 100 figures have to be taken.
A single figure like this ones:

each would be 0,24 € + VAT - unpacked in plastic bag to one adress. If there are weapons these should be better casted in pewter.

good idea. maybe it will also make collectors much more aware of what it means to get figurines produced and what the procedure is all about. the bottom line is always the money issue. just to let you know - I'm working on the viking set , the winner from my poll. it will be a very special set, so it still might take a little while to get finished.
