I have question though on the Roman allied cavalry what color would one paint the horse accouterments? I was going to use Reapers Tarnished brass
(I'm talking about the gear on the horse's head) but not so sure if only they had poloroid cameras back then....

If I was you I´d put the horses on Plastic bottle tops, sticking them on with either double sided tape or Baby bell wax/bluetac. The riders you could stick on pins pushed up their , ahem....Bottoms. It makes the handling of them 100 times easier.
It was discussed in this topic here on the forum.

Hope it helps.
The horse bits.............Silver. The roman equites ("knights") had to pay a lot for their mounts and decorated them accordingly.
The reins/horse belts etc could be made out of leather (more commonly)or woven in clotth of virtually any color available, red or blue apparently being most common.

Thanks, I'll stick with the nails for now, a holdover from when I painted 100's of 15mm figs,1/2400 warships etc. and having it on nails makes angles very easy to get to with brush. Silver eh? hmm thanks I will use that color, I imagine that they would be polished yes? I will use a combination of red and blue for the reins.
The allied cavalry should come out sharp  Thanks for your input

No problem. Also the shield for the roman Equites. I would´nt paint them in a uniform style, ie same colour and design. There was no particular same design at this period for mounted units unlike in the imperial age. Smae goes for their clothes. these were basically young "princes2 or better still rich kids who liked to ponce about and flaunt their wealth. remeber that after the battle of cannae, hannibal sent back their rings to show how badly he had "capped" the roman aristocrisy.
looking again at your "nail board" I can see that the nails are removeable.
The idea aint to bad, for figs with bases, but how are they stuck onto the nail heads??

Thanks for the info I will treat the next batch in more variety of colors
(Zvezda Roman cavalry) As for the mounting I use just plain white glue since its temporary occasionally they do fall of but thats due to my big fingers :-D A buddy of mine suggested it so as to speed up the painting of large amounts of 15mm figures and warships. really works well for doing cavalry because you can get to those weird angles without doing backflips.
I used to mount them temporarily on cardboard cut to size but I always had to retouch the bases up and there was finger fatigue as well as inability to get a brush into some spots.
