Assyrians

Posted by Iceman1964 on 18 Feb 2026, 19:18

I’m back with a new project :-D

Assyrians are well known for the ferocity they used in creating their empire, and they greatly improved the art of siege and capture cities: so here is a diorama showing an Assyrian siege.

I selected a wood base, I like its shape, but this will lead to more efforts when working on it, much stronger surface with respect to the cork I normally use.

The walls are from the Miniart medieval castle box I used also in previous dioramas, and the use of stone means that my diorama is located in the north zone of the Assyrian borders (about present Kurdistan) and not in the south (Babilon or similar cities) where the walls were made of clay bricks.
Having to pass from European medieval to ancient middle east walls, I decided to change the shape of the merlons, also to have the height reduction needed to fit the completed diorama in the transparent box I use to protect it from dust.

Another important part of the diorama is the ram, I use the Orion one.

Some of the figures are “recycled” from different old boxes I used in the past (greeks, troyans, persians, sumerians, salassi), with conversions to have better final results

But the eye-catchers will be the new Assyrians from Linear, they are the first 3D printed figures I use, they are astonishing for poses and details, a real gamechanger!!!! Here the whole set of figures

stay tuned :-D

I'm assuming all the"odd" figures will be defenders? That's a really good idea & will underline the differences between attacker & defender.

I, also, will be following this project with great interest.

Thanks XbriX, thanks Donald, the "odd" figures will be used for the defenders but also for the unarmed crew (slaves ?) pushing the ram toward the walls

How exciting to see a new project coming from you, Enrico! And this time, one from my favourite historical period, ancient ages.

As always, these early images clearly illustrate what is to come. The fortress walls and converted figures are spectacular.

Although I don't have the Linear-A Assyrians, I know they are of excellent quality. The ones I do have are from Caesar Miniatures, and in my humble opinion, they are also superb. Have you thought about including any of them? ;-)

Here's another fervent admirer who will be watching the next steps of this promising project with great interest. :-)

Santi.

Thanks Santi, the high quality of the caesar figures is well known, I had a lot of satisfaction from their figures for other dioramas (some of them are used also here, for the enemy side).
I took 3 Linear boxes (infantry, archers and sappers) because I wanted to see how is the future, the 3D resin figures ! Considering their cost well above the average I overcome the budget, no space for additional caesar :xd:

Thanks CliosPaintingBench, I have well in mind your fantastic works on Celts :-D The Assyrian diorama is similar in concept/geometry to the one I made for Britons vs. Romans, hope you will enjoy also this one :-D

The modification on the walls is clever! I am looking forward to your next steps. And I agree with you on the Linear-a figures, I like them as well.

Stay tuned :-D

Wow, Enrico, you’ve done a fantastic job on the woodwork of that ram. And the arrows stuck in it are a lovely touch – just as you’d expect when using it in a siege.

Thanks Santi, thanks Ben90.
I plan to use many arrows on ground and on shields, it will be one of the characteristics of this diorama.

This looks already good, even with the city walls still unpainted and no figures around. Gives a good impression of the assault on the gate.
