The Combat of the Thirty ! 1351

Posted by stephane42 on 08 Feb 2026, 18:55

Hello everyone!
Let me introduce myself: I am Geoffroy Mellon, squire. I am Breton and I support Charles of Blois (backed by the French) for the succession to the ducal throne of Brittany since the death of Duke John III of Brittany in 1341. The opposing party supports John of Montfort (backed by the English).
This has been going on for ten years.

And today, on the moor, a battle will take place:

Jean de Beaumanoir and 29 knights against Robert Bemborough and 29 knights.
The Combat of the Thirty!

It is a fight to the death. I don't know it yet, but I will not see the sun set...

Yes, I wanted to vary the approach to present my new creations. ;)
And yes, the list of knights is growing...

Here is Lord Robin III Raguenel, Lord of Châteloger.
Coat of arms of Raguenel: Quartered argent and sable, a label of three points counterchanged, in chief.

And here is Guillaume DE LA LANDE, squire.
Coat of arms of La Lande: Azure, three silver escutcheons, two and one.

Jean Rouxelot, Rousselot or Rousselet, knight, lord of Limoëlan, Parish of Sévignac,
"Sir Jean Rousselot was fiercely devoted to the cause until his death."
Argent, three battle-axes sable. 2. 1.

Only 26 more for the French Breton party... :)

These three new additions are every bit as good as the first knight, Stéphane; they are just as cool.

By the way, where do the original figures come from? Are they made of plastic by well-known manufacturers, metal, or 3D? I can't identify any of them. :eh:

Impressive the painting level and the deep historic research to identify the real shields of each of the knight :o

Medieval chivalry in all its splendor!
I really like the painting style, especially your chosen color palette: it conveys a very good impression of the knights' colorful appearance without looking unnatural or toy-like.

Thank you Santi Pérez, MABO, sberry, and Iceman1964 for your comments.
I've been interested in this pitched battle for a long time, and I waited until I had the miniatures to create a diorama. It's thanks to the Reconquest Design and Ezipion miniatures that I can make a diorama. I also find these miniatures magnificent and very enjoyable to paint.

I am pleased to present the Lord of Rochefort, the fifth figure I have created. Guy de Rochefort, Lord of Henleix in Saint-Nazaire. This knight gave me a hard time...

He will fight alongside his friends. Perhaps he will be wounded like so many others...

We find the Lord of Henleix in a muster roll, along with two of his 30 companions, Caro de Bodégat and Hugues Catus, in a muster roll received in Dinan by Thibaut de Rochefort, his first cousin, a few months later, in July 1351.

In 1354, he recaptured the castle of Nantes from the English; received a muster roll in Vitré in 1356, and then disappears into history...

Coat of arms: Vair of gold and azure.

I can well believe that this knight gave you trouble with his complicated coat of arms, Stéphane, but the result was worth it, just look at the pictures.

And keep up the good work with the remaining 25, think how fantastic the whole thing will look once it's finished. ;-)
