Panzer III S Modell

Posted by JurgenH on 15 Nov 2025, 17:28

Hello everyone,

Hello everyone, I have built two PIII s from S-Modell. I didn't like the chain from the start. The real problem is the rollers. They are designed as a single piece, with no gap between the rollers.
The first one is 7–8 years old, the second one is 1–2 months old.
A completely different approach to the drive problem. For the PIII 21.PD, I used the chains unchanged, but milled the rollers out of the center bar with a dental drill.

The chain was completely removed. In my last attempt ( 5), I fitted the rollers with new axles (Evergreen 1mm) and turned them by hand in a lathe.

I used various cutters and a custom-made turning tool for this. The rollers were then glued back on to size, whereby I dispensed with all the finer details that were not visible.
I coated the running gear area with a mixture of various watercolors from a tube and, after allowing it to dry briefly, worked on it with a bristle brush.
Finally, I attached a 40 cm OB Grikonov chain. As a detail, I added an angle above the driver's field of vision as improvised rain protection and drilled out the towing eyes with bolts. I added a smoke grenade launcher at the rear (my own casting), a few damages to the track plate, convoy lights, and headlights at the front and rear, all from my collection. The drive wheels are from a Airfix Stug III.
That's it. I still have to mount the spare roller.

To do this, I made a commander from a Hasegawa infantryman and a chest from Preiserfigure. Unfortunately, it's not quite finished yet. I wanted to show a soldier standing in the turret during a dusty ride. Consequently, he is black at the bottom and heavily dusty at the top.
Pictures to follow.

On both models I like the work on the weathering. The cipping of the colour is very well represented. I try this as well, but it doesn't work with constant success.

Ah and I forgot to ask: The models are from PSR, I guess?

Hello
First of all, thank you for all the positive responses.

Jan, I'm afraid I have to disappoint you, the 3s are from S Model. Great details, easy to build, except for the chain. But you can hide the flaw with a lot of mud. Tell me about your problem, I'm sure I can help .

The next III is an Ausf.M. The base is a Revell L tank. I still have to write the report and work on the vignette a bit. The post will be coming soon.

I am looking forward to the new report. And when I started a new comparable project, I will let you know. From the distance the models looked like the PSR ones. S Model I didn't know yet.

Hi Chris,
Yes, I have a similar story. I also used compressed air cylinders, but then I installed a car tire valve in the fire extinguisher. A nearby gas station had a compressor for filling tires that could generate 7 bar of compressed air. That was enough for a while. Then I connected a refrigerator compressor. Wonderful, it still works today. Over the years, the car valve broke inside. I bought a new one for 2 euros. But I can't get the big cover off anymore. The valve has to be installed from the inside out. I've tried everything, and believe me, I used to be a locksmith. My motto is: Nothing is impossible. I'm retired now and don't have the same opportunities I used to. I've welded the hole shut. First I have to put everything together and test it for pressure.
Iceman : sorry no other pictures . Thats all.
Jürgen

The weathering on these tanks is in fact excellent! They look extremely realistic. And your pictures demonstrate that it needs several steps to achieve this effect, it is more than adding just a bit of dirt here and there...

Hello everyone,
Actually, aging isn't that difficult. Paint it dark yellow. Dry paint the edges with a little dark gray. Remove paint chips either with the hairspray method, which can be used very precisely.
Or use the method with a kitchen sponge/insect sponge from the car. Dilute paint on paper.
Dab until the effect is visible. Of course, it gets weaker with each dab. Even with a small amount of sponge in the tweezers, you can't get everywhere.
Finally, I take dry pigments, which I remove again. Dry and damp with your finger or a brush.

Please note: The PIII from S model are versions E and G. The PIII from Revell is a version L extended to M.
The PIII M is ready ,only a flat finish.

Beautiful modelling work on these lovely vehicles.

The Mk 4 gets a lot of attention but I think there is something about the Mk3 that appeals.

Perhaps it’s all our Western Desert battles with the old Skytrex miniature's ( with pins for guns) many years ago .

Best wishes,

Chris
