Elephants and sarissas

Posted by Michael Robert on 13 May 2025, 20:38

What wonderful stuff, Enrico,
you kind of oblige everybody who wants to present this phalanx to perform the same conversions of the lances. It is so much more cool and the original bent joysticks will not be taken for serious any longer. I expect a fantastic diorama.
Greetings
Michael

Thanks Michael :-D
Thinking about it, being a figures producer I would not at all spend efforts and money to produce such horrible sarissas, i would just make the soldiers with empty hands and put in the box the broom bristles ;-)

I totally agree, Enrico. Although I've only recently started working with broom bristles, I've discovered that they're a fantastic material with multiple applications whenever you need a narrow, long, and sturdy pole/shaft/handle or something similar.

Forever and ever, Enrico.

The individual figures are superb, but all grouped together to form the phalanx offer a sight that is both spectacular (for everyone in general) and terrifying (for their enemies in particular). :notworthy:  :notworthy:  :notworthy:

Thanks all for the replays :-D

Finally the phalanx is completed, 62 pezetaroi packed in a block

The space in first line is of the soldier that will be..... in the trunk of the elephant, not a happy situation ;-)

Now it's time to work on the two elephants and the soldiers on them, hope to make as spectacular as I have in mind :xd:

Amazing.

I'm curious as to which manufacturer you will turn to for the nellie.

Donald,
thanks to your post I have discovered the song and the TV series, I had to google it to be sure who is Nellie :xd: :xd: :xd:

the two elephants are one the classic Zvezda, the other is from Linear (Hannibal passage of the Alps), I find this pose magnificent for my diorama, I hope to make it well :-)

they are reported before in this topic, you can see them (scroll about mid March).

Wow, Enrico, that phalanx looks beautifully terrifying. Beautiful because of the excellent painting work on the figures, and terrifying because of that row of sharp spikes that will surely scare off any enemy, including elephants (or nellies). :notworthy:  :notworthy:  :notworthy:

Keep going with this fantastic diorama, my friend.

thanks Santi, the idea for the scene is exactly the contrast between the mass of the phalanx made by many "small" humans packed together against the two "big boys" (with the crew onboard) :-D

Have the Phalanx box from Zvezda, but haven't done anything yet. Here we can see how it can be done! Very nice!

Thanks Gunnar,
keep attention that Zvezda have only "horizontal" and "60 degrees angle" sarissas, it's well enough against humans, but with elephants the sarissas (even the first rows) are pointing mainly to the body of the beast, something about "30 degrees angle". So it depends on which type of diorama you will design :-D

I have now completed the first elephant :-D

here below the step-by-step build-up

and the final result with the enemy launched by the elephant trunk and the two of the turret jumping out to escape the fall of the beast

looking the pictures I realized the internal of the turret was "naked" , therefore I added some weapon on the walls supposed to be used by the soldiers

Hope you like it, now let's go with the second elephant, much less dramatic ;-)
