[1/72] Sengoku Ikko Ikki Japanese Army - The Tanba Peasant Ikki

"We could use a little enlightenment from a pirate. How would you kill a king?" - Wakisaka Yasuharu (The Admiral: Roaring Currents, 2014)

Image

The 似島 氏家 (Ninoshima Ujiie) - translating to the Ujiie family on Ninoshima Islands, are a band of wokou pirates that commonly raided the Ming coastlines in the past but have lately focused their attentions on Japanese settlements with recent wars raging nearby. In the wake of bloody skirmishes, villages are left ransacked and defenceless; easy prey for the wokou to raid. From their base on the Ninoshima Islands, the Ujiie family have settled to make their fortunes, once using their knowledge of the currents and surroundings to fish, now using it to infiltrate and attack their neighbours.

Image

Their followers are also driven to the same desperation and have opportunistically seized the chance to enrich themselves in this lawless time. Their leader, 氏家 長種 (Ujiie Nagatane), is a veteran of many raids that has decided to join the Tanba Peasant Ikki to claim ever larger spoils. The pirates are not afraid of the risks of war, having been steeped in violence to survive but their loyalties are to themselves. They will cut loose and run if a greater force makes its attentions known.

Image

They take calculated risks, aligning themselves to the Peasant Ikki for now as they have become a dominant regional force, but their allegiance can shift like the wind. The monk leader Kiyoyasu is aware of this, but must marshal as much strength as he can. Out of necessity, the Tanba Peasant Ikki will take skilled warriors wherever they hail from, regardless of how dubious their motivations.

Image

(似島 氏家 form the fourth unit of my Ikko Ikki army. From the beginning, I knew I wanted to depict the Wokou archetype, as they are an iconic part of Sengoku warfare but didn't seem to fit my daimyo force. I wanted to create a more pop culture conception of the Wokou rather than just a historical depiction, as the visual potential for that was more interesting.

Image

For me, that meant researching wokou in pop culture media such as games and Japanese animation. The end result is more armoured than historically but still grounded in a plausible history.

Image

Some figures look quite historical, one of them looks like the poster character from Seven Samurai but no figure is fantastical. I wanted to see what would separate the Wokou from other units and it seemed to be more bared flesh, there are less sleeves and shorter pants.

Image

I also took inspiration from the Ikki Island raiders from Ghost of Tsushima, which showed wokou wearing patch-work clothing. I liked the chaotic look of clothing sewn from patches, it made them seem even more dishevelled than the peasants.

Image

I made greenstuff patches for sleeves and wrappings and plastered them onto my models. I also wanted to keep the weapons varied if possible and luckily the sculpts I chose showcased a variety of different weapons.

Image

To link the unit to my broader Tanba Peasant Ikki, I've continued the use of cream coloured accessories and cream coloured tints for clothing.

Image

The sculpts come from all over the place, a few are Saga Miniatures 3D prints, two are custom 3D prints given to me by a friend, one is a wokou 3D print from Red Dawn 3D Miniatures and one is a greenstuff custom build using a Zvezda Gaul Warrior head, a Caesar Miniatures Ninja body and various greenstuff clothes. The base uses the same principles as the first unit.)

"Life is like unto a long journey with a heavy burden."- Tokugawa Ieyasu

Image

The 小荷駄 (Konida) - translating to the labourers of the baggage train, are porters transporting ammunition, provisions, and supplies for war. They are an essential part of the army; unseen and unconsidered, yet their impact far-reaching for the war effort.

Image

As the Ikki is made of self-sufficient farmers, there is no shortage of rations and as the Ikki generally fights to defend its territorial borders, logistics are easily handled, but as the war effort expands and the Ikki enter the larger war raging across the land, there exists a need, and opportunity, to export their goods further.

Image

Trade in these times can be lucrative and expanding their supply networks builds alliances and generates wealth, ensuring the survival of the Tanba Peasant Ikki. In battle, the Konida are bystanders, guarding their valuable supplies, only fighting as reserves if the situation becomes too dire.

Image

(小荷駄 form the fifth unit of my Ikko Ikki army. I made this unit because I have a lot of peasants I need to get done and I want some visual variety in my units.

Image

I didn't want all my peasants to look essentially the same; a bunch of normal guys wielding weapons. Having a few older Zvezda Peasants with Ammo Supply around, it was practical to touch them up and use them for this army.

Image

There would be few other places they could work in. So I decided to make a baggage train unit out of these sculpts and the varied sculpts by companies that depict the average Sengoku-era peasant.

Image

There are a variety of 3D prints from companies like Wargames Atlantic, Smol Miniatures and Iain Lovecraft. The colour scheme of this unit is much like the broader army, with ununiform bright colours shaded with bone tints.

Image

One difference is that members of this unit have tanned or stained skin. This was done with brown washes to give the impression that these figures have been working in harsh sunlight their whole lives.

Image

As part of my theme of religious fanatacism, I researched Ikko Ikki banners and gave the mule unit a banner with a Buddhist mantra. I want this army to be differentiated by having banners carried by my weakest units, as the leaders embody the principles of the army and the elites are mercenaries and aren't interested.

Image

This banner was made with plasticard, a greenstuff rope and a piece of sprue cut and shaped with pliers. The base uses the same principles as the first unit.)

Great to see you here again, Owen. You have done a remarkable job of painting those peasants.

It's true that those responsible for provisioning are the great forgotten ones of armies in all historical eras, but without them the various units could hardly advance and be ready to fight. :(

I especially love the depiction of the sandals on this figure, who I assume is the leader of the group:

Fantastic work, my friend!

Thanks Santi! Yeah I don't know why I didn't do a unit for so long, I think real life just kept happening, things always get a little busier near the end of the year. The supply unit is just handling the leftovers from Christmas ;-)

Yeah the raised sandals on the unit leader are a nice touch but it makes gluing the figure to a base a little harder because the join is so thin. I'll just have to be careful while handling.

Thank you! I know you're a painter of eyes too and it really is a lot of work (and luck, for myself, I jab and hope) but I can't stop now because all my figures have that. It's nice for close up photography though.

Cheers, I really do go through a conceptual stage for my units before making them, I think it makes the overall unit turn out better, it's a little bit of time but I think it's rewarding!
