Pony Wars Project

Posted by PaulRPetri on 17 Sep 2022, 21:07

Hello All,
I thought I would post some images of my very early start on my Pony Wars project. I had originally started this project in 15mm scale, trying to follow along with the original rules. After working on it for a bit I wondered if I could do this project in my favorite scale instead. The answer I believe to this question is YES!
Additional I thought I would share a few things on how I paint my miniatures perhaps it will be of some small use to someone out there.
This is a new priming procedure for me. I have mixed Mod Podge with grey paint and some windshield wiper fluid.
Image

I normally I spray prime my miniatures but on this project I decided to apply with a brush. Here are a few results of the priming. I can say the base primer color does not cover completly but the painting over it is much better than my spray primer method.

The above figures came from Imex.
Image

Imex has an excellent selection of wagons and Indians. Some finished shots.

My plan is to use the Blackpowder rules for the combat and a very simple random placement for troops arriving on the board. The original Pony War rules are inspring but not really very useful for wargaming in the 21st century.
Additional I want to see how many of the plastic companies I can use for this project. Here are a few additional finds I scored on EBAY.
Image

This box is loaded with tons of wagons!!
Image

Waterloo 1815 has some excellent 7th cavalry figures and Sioux warriors. Unfortunatly the Sioux warriors are very rare I only scored 1 box so far. The cavalry is easily had. I also decided to get some Atlantic figures reissued by Nexus. Have some 7th cavalry and a buffalo herd!
Image

The only two wagon types not in the wagon train box.
Image

I want to stay on track and finish this project in a reasonable amount of time. I tend to jump around from project to project but I hope I can stay focused for a few weeks anyway!

Thanks for having a look.

Thanks everyone for the morale support I will need it.

BB I have used the Imex wagons in my Zulu War collection previously now they will be used as intended. I will post some pictures in the next few days of totally complete units.

Just a quick update on a few figures that have been completed for this project over the weekend.

First two shots show some Imex Sioux both mounted and foot figures. They are quite good figures!

The last shot shows some pioneer families, painted awhile back for a fantasy game I had in mind! They are standing in front of a very handy HO model railroad Old West building which came as is from an EBAY purchase.

There are several very useful buildings out there for the model railroad folks which I was unaware of until very recently. Will serve my needs very well!!

Wow, looking great! Any thought about dismounted Cav figs? I also have a bunch of 1/72 Pony Wars figs. Dismounted Cav is my issue.

Thanks

Hi John thanks for the comment.

I have thought long and hard on dismounted cavalry figures. Nothing has come of it!!!

In my Zulu game I just place a standing horse with one horse holder on a base behind them to indicate they are dismounted. However Newline design have them see the link.

Yeah, I love Newline Design! I'm just worried there would be a noticeable size difference with the plastics. If they were 1/72 metals I'd be ordering several sets! If you do get some please post pics!
I have 2 Airfix forts that I plan on using as a single fort. 1/72 is my scale of choice. I just have soooo much painted up in 15/18mm for it.

Thanks!

Just a short update on my Pony Wars project. Not too much accomplished but here is what I have.
I added 2 mounted units and scored another building on EBAY.

Up for painting next week is the last of my mounted figures.

On a side note that I havent mentioned before I have been sealing all these figures with Minwax Polycrylic coating. Because these are for the wargame table I am always looking for the best way to seal in the paint. Once figures are based I seal the whole base with Testors Dullcoat. Link to Minwax

I was also able to buy off of EBAY this very excellent kit from Atlantic Via Nexus.

And now for my confession... I had actually started this project in 15mm before I decided to switch gears and try it in 1/72 scale. So here is my Photo confession.

Interesting stuff with a different subject matter .

They look really nice and the fort has a definite frontier feel.

Keep up the good work .

Best wishes,
