The Shire

Posted by dykio on 06 Apr 2021, 17:56

Hi guys,

I always had the idea to make a "big" diorama of the shire. By big i mean something like 120x60cm because that is the maximun space i have to build something like that. But it always was just a plan and i never had the time or the drive to really start with it.
And being at home most of the time does have one big advantage... it gives me a lot more time for the hobby. Now i do like painting figs but i also need to have something beside it, so i finally started with my shire diorama.
Now i never have build such a big thing so i decided to take the opportunity to try and use al kinds of technics of scenery building that i could find just to see what works for me. I have no idea when it will be finished but so once in a while i will post some picturen just to let you see how far i am.
I have already been busy for about 8 months so that says it al about my tempo :-D

But for no ...here we go with the pictures from the very first start:

first things first so i started with some drawings of how it probably will look

Image
It starts at the right below with a water mill, left of it should be the green dragon and then going up three hobbithouses ending with Bilbo's place

Image
I have all kinds of books and magazines wich i use for examples. Its a bit like browsing the internet when i get into those magazines.... looking into one i remember another, then i grab that one and on and on and before you know it the evening is gone without doing anything :-D

Image
To figure out which scale the doors and so should be i always use a fig for measures. But what makes fantasy so nice is that it realy doesnt matter how big or small you make it.... it is fantasy :-D

Image
Just for some exaples i looked through my magazines again and then......

Image
Up to the drawing table and just use your own imagination :yeah:

Next episode :Lets build something :-D

Laterrrrrr

This looks like it will be a very beautiful and serene scene.
Do you have plans already which materials you will use? Seems like a lot of scratch-building is ahead of you...

I will follow this one with pleasure since I have in mind to create something like that ... but not that good and in larger scale (since I have larger hobit figure).

This looks like a fascinating project. I have been a fan of JRRT and his imaginary Middle Earth all my life, so will be intrigued to see how this develops!

to answer your question about materials :
I have reorganized our place and this is what i have gathered lately. Lots of leftovers and other stuff i have just laying around. So i wll use al of this
Image

and now the next step.

I started with removing the paper from foamboard pieces so that only the foamboard remains. Then i cut out the windows and doors.
Image

the material is not so firm so i glued it on some pieces of leftover wood.
Image

next i cutted up pieces of wood, little popsickle stick or coffee stirrers or something like that to make wooden planks etc.
Image

And i made little stones from thick paper (karton)
Image

this i then glued in place and voila....a hobbit village-ish :-D
Image

Next step is painting. First a grey stone base color (just white wall paint mixed with some black.
Image

Then a white sort of drybrush. I use an old stif brush and just dip it on.
Image

then i got carried awyay a little bit and forgot to make pictures but the next steps were
painting the wood brown
drybrushing the wood with a lighter brown
give some of the smal stones around the windows/doors another colour. in this case red and yellow and drybrush them with grey.

I decided to give the houses different colours and gave them a very thin wash. the top one for example was done with a very much thinned green colour.
Image

so thats al for now. Next step will be the making of the base for wich i will use leftover isolation material.

Laterrrrrrrrr
