Sassanid Persian Army - step by step

Posted by PhilC on 26 Feb 2021, 19:36

Hi, dear fellow forumers :-)

I've started a new project (one more...), because I need opponents for my Late Roman army... and also because this army might, one day, be used in battle against Chariobaude's Late Romans!
(please note: "might, one day" )

(personal message to Chariobaude: did you receive my last email about AdG ?)

The first step was to paint an element of levy infantry, here it is:

To complete my army, I must paint:
- 32 levy infantrymen
- 32 other light infantrymen
- 12 clibanarii
- 24 horse archers
- 2 elephants
- a general element

Still a lot to do, hope you like the first step ;-)

Good looking levy infantry, the lowest form of life in a Sassanid army but nonetheless useful. These are in suitably muted colours and nicely painted.

I have several boxes of each of the Sassanid sets released to date by HaT, but will not be progressing these until they complete the range with Cataphracts and Elephants, although I accept that other alternatives exist for these important 'troop types'. And at the rate that HaT are progressing new sets, this may be a very long wait indeed, so an alternative is probably the best route to take.

What are your intentions for the elephants? And is your army without noble cataphracts...or are these part of the General element?

Will be interesting to see how this project progresses.

I really like these guys, nice and solid looking soldiers, even if they are levies.

Certainly not, I am an Anarchist, have a look at my new avatar

To Minuteman: since I want to paint an army to fight against Late Romans, I'm trying to be accurate for the early period. As I could read in several sources (Osprey, Montvert and wikipedia), the cavalry included the former rulers of Persia, that is the Parthians (as it happened almost everywhere at any period). So I will fill the missing cataphracts with Parthians, and will probably do the same with light horse archers.
Regarding the elephants, I think that the armored seleucid and lagid elephants by Zvezda will do the job, but of course I have to replace the crew. If possible, I will use ancient Indian drivers, and some Sassanid light infantry will climb into the towers.
Easy and not too inaccurate, I hope. But of course, any other suggestion is welcome :)

... hum, I already hear the sound of Carlosfaro's scalpels

By dominating I meant: "painting really well."

Also you are cranking out a lot of work during this period: advent calendars, duels, army projects, you name it!

I don't catch everything, but this one I had understood .
I could also have chosen a sado-masochist avatar, but not today

Regarding the number of figures painted these days, I think it has something to do with lockdown, and also with the fact that the mountain of unpainted figures almost reaches the ceiling...

Always love seeing ancients and your models. I love the muted greenish, creamish colour, it reminds me of painted eastern building brickwork, very appropriate, fantastic work.

Plus I need references from other people to draw inspiration for my own projects, so please keep going!

I have really no comments to do!
I really like this project and admire your tenacity.

About accuracy, I just thinkbñ that Sassanid Persians were never so good documented so all your proposals are right in a way or another. Hope to see all the painted troops Soon :).

pS- Just avoid any african variety-looking Elephant!!

Hey Phil, no, i never received your message ! :(

But it will be so nice to have a good old civil war between our late romans !
Actually i'l thinking of a "patrician" army, depicting Marcellinus, the roman warlord of Dalmatia, an incredible character ! But i REALLY need advices on rulebooks ....

@Chariobaude: Ok, now I understand why I received no answer :D
PM sent.

@Carlosfaro: to find documentation about Sassanids is not that easy, particularly regarding the non-heavy cavalry troops ! Regarding the elephants, I know that only indian ones can be used in a Sassanid army, with their indian mahuts - same source as the Achemenids and the Seleucids after them.
