Huibs T34 tank project

Posted by huib on 25 Aug 2021, 15:37

Thanks, Peter!

Paint and decals
With the building process finished, I could start painting. For a change I choose a camouflage pattern, which you do not often see on Soviet tanks.

Image
First green overall. (Humbrol 117)

Image
Then a camouflage pattern of red brown. (Revell 84) (How different the colors show on different photographs! Truth is in the middle)

Image
Some decals on the turret (from the old Esi/Revell kit).

Image
Some rusty tracklinks hooked to the turret, partly covering the decals.

Image
And some chipping in grey and green. Ready for a gloss coat.

It is amazing how that red-brown changes that green! Love your work.

Thank you, Steve and Peter!

Weathering
During the next phase the camp pattern became much more inconspicious. :-D

Image
After a layer of gloss a dirty filter of khaki oil paint was sloshed on the model. As the effect was too subtle after one layer a second treatment with the same followed. The tank looks very dirty now, and camo pattern is toned down.

Image
A second layer of gloss served to fixate the filter. Then a dark brown pointwash was applied and all detail drybrushed using two tones of light green.

Image
Weathering was finish with streaking of rust (red brown), rain (white) and oil/fuel (dark brown).

Image
Other side of the turret.

Image
Hull.

Image
The present state. Ready for wheels and tracks.

The cammo pattern is toned down a lot. To much maybe? :eh:

Still love this model! Go on Huib!

Thanks Peter!

Wheels

Some work on the wheels.

Image
The roadwheels on display. The steel wheels on the left have the wholes widened with a drill already. The others have to be done still.

Image
Hubcovers for the drive and tension wheels.

Image
Ready for paint.

Image
Painted

Image
Weathered.

Image
The wheels glued in place. It took some effort using drills, files and knives to line them out. For strength I included some 1,2mm iron axles on strategic places.

Image
On its wheels. Now for the tracks.

Thanks Peter!

Tracks

Image
The kit tracks are of the link & length type. Those are not necessarily easy to construct, but I prefer them above the rubber band tracks.

Image
And detail is quite nice: the outside....

Image
...and the inside. The guiding teeth are bit small, but that is all I can comment.

Image
First painted in antracit to create depth and shadow.

Image
Than sloshing several colours of brown, and drybrushing with two metallic colors.

Image
I bended the upper parts of the track a bit to suggest some sag by gravity.

Image
Some instrumental violence to glue the tracks in position.

Image
In position!

Image
But it was not easy as the length of the tracks was not exact, so I had to smuggle a bit by removing one tracklink and leaving a bit of space between different links. I hope its hardly visible when standing upright.

Image
Also a bit of fiddling on the other side.

Image
And now on to the last additions!

The last additions

I finished the T34 tank.

Image
The engine ventilation grille received mesh, made from a teabag.

Image
Towing cables are included in this kit. A typical Esci detail. But these straight plastic cables are difficult to bend in a convincing way. So I made cables myself from copper fuse wire.

Image
The towing eyes were transferred to the new copper cables.

Image
Painted and weathered.

Image
An unditching beam was added, made from a bamboo skewer. The woodgrain was emphasised using a dark brown wash. Sewing thread was used as rope to tie it down.

Image
Cables and beam glued in place.

Image
Headlight painted silver on the inside and glassed using clearfix.
The tank is finshed, now for a crew and a vignette.

So step by step Huib show us the reason for the amount of (nice build :yeah: ) T34.
The Russians need only toothpicks to build a Tanks. :xd:

On the other hand the Germans need milling , drilling machines and and so much more to build a tank.

Very good work you did. I like the idea to use a teabag for the mesh of the ventialtion grille.
Nice work done right ;-)

Thanks, Wiking and Dombom!

Crew

Image
Of course the pictures of advancing Russian tanks covered with infantry riding on the rear deck and mudguards are famous. So in my series of T34's this image cannot miss out.

Image
A sprue of Hät Soviet Tank Riders. These Hät figures are not very good, but I will do with them. (Preiser is better, but difficult to obtain these days).

Image
Tortured in Medieval style.

Image
Painted and weathered..

Image
The tankcommander included in the kit constructed, painted and weathered.

Image
The figures on the tank. Not all figures do fit, but it looks reasonably crowded like this.

Image
And now on to the last stage: a small base.

Peter wote:
And where is FredG, ...

I was thinking the same!
Miss his pictures with the hole in the trumpet.
And comments to our work too.

I have to regroup all the tanks to withstand these red T34 HORDES.

Looking good again! Waiting for the base as the last step for this project!

Concerning the tracks: I am working on an old ESCI Pz.IV. The tracks there are really fiddly and really badly constructed. There is no point to fix them precisesly. That was terrible for me... So I know what you mean.

Hm, Wiking is gathering his forces  , and my T34´s with 76mm guns cannot beat his giant cats. I´m afraid I have to finish this one quickly and build something with more firepower....

Good luck with the Esci tracks, Mabo. Yes these can be a real PITA. Show us some pictures of your result.

Vignette
To finish this model I made a small base as I did for all my t34´s till now.

Image
In the same style I used the upper rim of a Yoghurt container and a piece of plywood.

Image
I bought me some cheap childrens clay.....

Image
.....and sculped some basic scenery.

Image
Painted.

Image
Varnished.

Image
After several washes, drybrushes and a matte varnish.

Image
The different parts of an oldfashioned electricity pole.

Image
Constructed.

Image
Some weathering.

Image
Pole positioned, electric lines made from copperwire, the side of the base painted, and some grass added. Ready!

Image
Final pictures soon.
