2 cm Flak "Saving Private Ryan"

Posted by GumSmith on 21 Oct 2020, 17:46

Hi,
i was talking with a friend about his german WW 2 wargaming army and sometime he mentioned, that he needs a 2 cm gun like the one in "Saving Private Ryan" and which kit to take best for it.
I said, it was a 2 cm Flak 38, with trailer (Sd.Anh.51), and Dragon has a good kit , but only as set with Horch as towing vehicle. Price is around 18,-€, if you find one in shops. And on ebay...not easy to find and expensive when you only want the gun.
First to Fight has a 2 cm Flak 30, an early version of the one used in Film. But that doesn`tt matters for his troops. And you can still get, price ist 8,50 € for 2 guns.
And after all this talking about 2 cm Flak guns and "Saving Private Ryan" and so on i thought, hey, i have the FtF kit in my stash, why not ....
ok, here is what happens on my workbench last days:

Brilliant conversion here, I'm guessing the Germans were saving brass due to shortages by this time in the war? Great looking piece and crew.

Very nice work indeed.

The spent ammunition collector looks great.

There is a real ‘feel’ to the composition due to the movement articulated by yourself.

Excellent.

Best wishes,

Chris

Thanks for your answers.
I find the "Hülsenfangkorb" (shell collecting basket) only on a few pics on 2 cm Flak 38, on some museum guns and reenactor/collector pieces. But it was factory build, as all baskets i see were looking the same.
At all, i don`t know why it was attached or from which date on it was used.
I scratced it from photoetched parts from Dragon 7270 T34/85 Mod.1944.
Figures are build with Caesar Multipart Set CM7716 German Panzergrenadiers Normandy 1944
I like to use them to build some unique wargaming bods:

Nothing i would use for Dioramas, but very useful for this purposes. I changed heads/helmets against Dragon ones, and also take small arms etc. from Dragon, Preiser and other brands, but Figures are easy to convert.

Those Caesar build a kit figures were too bulky and the hands holding the weapons not at all convincing, at least after assembly by a modeler of my limited skill. Swapping out different headgear and weapons was well done.

Correct :yeah:
"konnte ein Fangnetz angebaut werden. Vor allem im späteren Kriegsverlauf wurden die Leerhülsen wiederverwertet."

A (cartridge) capture net could be attached. Especially in the later stage of the war the empty cases were re-used.
Oke is also correct that they were factory produced (
"Außerdem wurde an die Waffe ein Fangnetz angebaut, um die umstehende Bedienung vor den auswerfenden leeren Geschoßhülsen zu schützen*
) and were most likely removed by the crews but replaced later in the war.

*in addition a capture net was built onto the weapon to protect the crew from ejected shell cases

Hello Paul,
thx for informations. I was to lazy to research about that shell collector. Just looked for pics.

@bluefalchion: I don`t like that hands, too. I have a lot of resine hands so i could change that - but for wargaming figs it is to much work in my eyes.

I´ve done some more painting yesterday night:

Quite nice.
The mesh improve the 20mm gun a lot.
Is this a teddy bear in the "edge"?

Cammo of the gun and users do not fit well to the base.

Looks really great ;-)
I like your basing a lot, how did you do it and which material did you use?

The uniforms are nicely made, I didn't dare to do the German camouflage yet hahaha. But I gonna try to do it the way you did :-)

Hi dombom,
thanks. The painting of the camouflage clothing is quite simple, Vallejo Iraqui Sand as base, filter with German Camoflage beige and strongly diluted green and brown for the spots.
I built the base as a master and molded it with the cutouts for the 2 - €-cent coins.
The rubble and the debris I make from a piece of brick, which I beat with a hammer, drill dust (I catch when drilling holes with an envelope, saves cleaning), matches and balsa wood. I glue the whole thing with water-diluted white glue on the base.

Very nice. Great painting of the Splittertarn camo. And the mesh cartridge basket is a real finishing touch to the gun.

Thanks bro. I keep that in mind when I do my next WW2 diorama. Planned on doing something with a "Sturmtiger" between ruins and then I gonna try out your technique :-)
