Zvezda Republican Roman Infantry

Posted by Konrad on 03 Oct 2020, 10:18

After I already painted the imperial Romans of ZVEZDA,
I am now working on a larger group of legionaries from
the time of the republic.
I would like to use my self-made sign stickers again,
but the many details on the shields make this work
too time-consuming this time.

Some figs are ready.
Will be continued....

I like them very much. The natural tone of the colours is very well done.

No matter the scale, 20 or 28 mm, it’s clear that Romans are your specialty, Konrad. :-D

Great work on these fantastic Zvezda figures. :notworthy:

Compliments.

Santi.

Very nice figures. If the stickers are too tricky to make work, you could always hand paint the designs on the shields (which would turn this into a five year project all of a sudden :P).

This interests me: certainly for the excellence of the painting but also because I'm about to start on a bunch of Newline Polybians I recently bought.

They're a legion's worth: about 50 figures, scaled down.

I have a number of plastics, painted years ago but want to paint these at a standard closer to Konrad's efforts.

And so we come to shields......

Previously, I painted simple designs but I was thinking about transfers.
Little Big Man is a supplier, who'll do transfers at 20mm.

https://www.littlebigmenstudios.com/pro ... roman-hat/

However, each transfer needs to be cut out (so, in halves for each shield. If you look at the square of the boss, this will be quite a bit of work. I'm still thinking....

BTW tunic colours. I'm aware there's a suggestion that they all wore a dull red tunic at a slightly later date.

Wargamers tend to either paint all figures like this, or to give each part of the Legion (ie Hastatii, Triarii etc) a different colour. This is the way Konrad's gone.

Ditto basic shield colour.

All comments from any of you on this?

Just a warning Donald on the Little Bigmen decals. I used them on my Republican romans and they took some real effort to get to work. Peeling the decal off was a real pain in the rear. But on the plus side they look good.

Thanks, Paul.

LBM Studios wrote back & said they'd not be a perfect fit on the Newline figures, so I'll stick to giving the shields a flat colour & wash.

After all, that's what Konrad has done & his look super.

That's what I do mate, I also give my Hastati, Triarii etc a different colour just so I can distinguish whos who on the battle field.

It's such an early period, with so little factual material, a lot of people base their notions on Polybian Romans on what came later. Always a bit dodgy.

I've done a little research on the topic & there seems to be little or no evidence that Roman shields had any decoration & , I think, only Polybius who indicates shields may have been a solid colour. So: negative evidence versus a vague possibility......

So I think (wargamer's privilege), you can do what you want & nobody can say you're definitely wrong.. I do like your idea & may use it.

Thanks, donald
