Battle of Bannockburn diorama

Posted by Ray.Caruana on 07 Jun 2020, 00:56

Hi my friends. Been a while since I posted some work.
I am currently working on two projects; a Roman Centurion single figure and this diorama depicting a schiltron formation at the Battle of Bannockburn.
Here are some pictures of the intial stages...

Very impressive conversion work, especially with the smoothness of the sculpting and the care in the wire joins and the brass spear-shafts. I love the Valedmar metals. Shaping up very nicely!

HYEUCH!

Really interesting post Ray. Very nice figures and very good conversions; I think this is going to be great.

The horse head swap is fabulous! it gives a really dynamic pose. Well done for spotting the potential there.

p.s. It's nice that one of your figures helps you put the drill bit in the chuck.

I like something like that of "how to do" very much.

This shows me that I am not alone to pin my figures (hard plastic, I superglue it) to the base.
And from time to time someone show a nice solution for "problems" I run in earlier and how he fix it in a different way.

Figure pose are live like. But compared to Ray´s past works that is no surprise to me.

Thank you for sharing.

Please tell us something about the metal figs. Are they from Valdemar or already modified by yourself for making individual copies?

Thank you very much for your kind comments.
MABO the figures are all Valdemar except for one of the horses which is a Toma miniatures piece. One a couple of figures were modified the rest out of the kit.

Hello Ray,
let me join in. Very good pictures to show your craftsmanship. And you go and modify Alex figures. Chapeau.
And modifying metals in this small scale is also another level.
Like it a lot and will watch with great pleasure

I love the way the light hits the tunic - was it painted with a bone basecoat, brown wash, bone layered on top, pure white highlight on hard edges nearest to the sky?

Same principle with the green? Darker green, black? wash, darker green, lighter green layer, even lighter layer, lightest green dappled on in a small line?

Hey Ray,
great conversions ...
The figures now have perfect postures and anatomy.
The painting is breathtaking right from the start
and one can expect some wonderful things for the finished figures.
Thank you for letting us share in the individual steps.

Thank you for your kind comments.

OwenChpw I don't remember the exact colours I used, but the technique is similar to what you mentioned. Only I almost never use black to shade or pure white to highlight.
