Diorama "Belgium 1940"

Posted by GumSmith on 07 Jun 2019, 12:15

Hi all,
some more old stuff i blowed away the dust of centuries...ok, dust of some years, i started this in 2012.

Figures: Zvezda, parts of Dragon and Preiser
belgian T 15: old Resinekit by Retromodel
SdKfz.223: Dragon

I built the 223 ootb, only added the antenna at back of the little MG-turret and holding rods for cover grids.

The T 15 is a real old kit, tracks and roadwheels are very simple, i tried to do some detail work on it and will cover it with dust heavily at the end.
I have also replaced the gun barrel with a syringe cannula and attached some Maco tools to the outside of the tank so he doesn't look so naked.

The building is a metal workshop with workbenches, tools and material storage. In the yard there are some finished fence elements which only have to be sandblasted and painted.

The scene will show a few paratroopers, who immediately after the end of the fights for Eben-Emael and the Albert Canal examine the workshop and an abandoned T 15. On the road one of the paratroopers instructs the leader of a reconnaissance unit into the area.

Stunning work.

The gates etc are fantastic and the view at the back looks real!

Love the Fallschirmjager.

Keep it up.

Brilliant stuff.

Best wishes,

Chris

Very nice! I really like the workshop with the rusty metal and the figure conversions are great, very natural looking poses.

Yes, like Graeme I too like the rusty metal store table. I plan to do a storage like that for alloy in my actual dio. Get some ideas to do it simple but realistic. Your idea is right now im my, mayby that stroage thing idea collection.
Lot of nice details all arond the base like tools, storage, green on the walls are nicely done. As in the back side of the house. Since a few years I preferre as you do that asymetrical shape of a base. With curved edges.

I think I see that Dio in Heiden in the past?

This really lovely work, Gunsmith, with a great eye to the smallest details. I love the theme too. This episode is rarely covered in modelling.

Hi,
Thanks for your comments. I am happy that you like the diorama and that you can use one or the other idea.
The figures are now finished, the scout car commander gets a card in his left hand after the painting.
In the workshop I have shown a drawer of the factory cabinet open, one of the paratroopers has just raised it and inspected the contents.

Hello, everyone,
I've now decided on green window frames, let's see how it works at the end. I also placed a cupboard and documents on the first floor. Of course the whole thing has to be worked in with rubble. In the workshop I brought the gas bottles from the welding machine to the wall with appropriate hoses to the welding machine on the workbench.

I also started to paint the figures. But I haven't really made any progress yet.

Look even better and better.

Your leavelets on the 1st floor is a small , easy but verry effective eyecatcher on the Dio.
And livelike placed.
I like things like that.
Not too much but a color contrast to the whole area.

You should really think about your toffifee consume. But if it helps creating such nice dioramas, I should try some as well :xd:

Hello, everybody,
I have worked the cabinet on the first floor into the rubble, the papers lying around are no longer bright white and the vehicles have got their first layer of dust. Also the painting of the figures is progressing.
In addition, I started today to insert shards of glass into the window frames and distribute them in the rubble. Unfortunately I could not really photograph them in the rubble.

The shards are again made of real glass, of slide covers.

Slide covers, what a good idea!

This is building up into a fabulous piece of scenery and, even on their bottletops, the figures are breathing real life into it.

Wonderful details! I love the broken glass.

A question: I know the grey/brown German camouflage was used during the conquest og Poland. But was it still in use in may 1940 during Fall Gelb?

Hi,

@wiking:
I think I see that Dio in Heiden in the past?

Maybe, but it must have been a long time ago. But I'm not sure if I exhibited it once.
But I've exhibited this one several times (although it's not finished either. But it's going to be done next):

@huib:
My current state of knowledge :
On 7 November 1938 the order was given to repaint the vehicles at the units, base colour dark grey, one third of the area with camouflage stripes dark brown.
Since the brown color was very dark, it is hardly ever clearly visible on black-and-white pictures, so it looks as if the vehicles were painted in one color.
On 31 July 1940 the order was given that the vehicles should only be painted dark grey in one colour.
