Vietnam - Battle for Hué

Posted by Taipeh on 15 Feb 2019, 10:01

Hello,
in my Projects around the Vietnam War we develope different Vehicle of the Mule 274, which had been used by US Marines in the Battle for Hué or in the Siege of Khe Sanh. This small all terain Vehicle could carry up to 1/2 ton of Cargo, but was also used as Plattform for the heavy weapons of the US Marines Battalions, the 12,7mm MG M2 and the 106mm recoiless gun.

I finished painting of the first Version of my mule sets. This time a load of ammunition boxes, together with 3 figure and a M60 MG.

The next Version I have to paint as fast as possible, here the 3D drawing

1. Transport of wounded Grunts ( Mule 274 + 4 Figure)
Image
2. the heavy 12,7mm MG M2 with tripod (Mule 274 + MG + 3 Figure)
Image
3. the 106mm Recoiless Gun M40 ( Mule 274 + M40 gun + 3 figure)

I paint my figure with Vallejo Colours. Have anybody a good Basic Colour for the US Uniforms in Vietnam ? I notice that the uniforms are bleached very fast, so a good Basic Colour which could be hightlighted in different ways would help painting a lot.

Ciao Michael

Very evocative stuff of a difficult time for the USA.

Excellent modelling indeed, roll period music.

Best wishes,

Looks like you want to use Olive Green and fade it with white or sand as desired. He also says use a darker wash for a streak down the back and in the armpits for perpetually sweaty soldiers.

I get the Code numbers of this Camouflage Colours in Vallejo Colours , but I think they are for 1/35, here for 1/72 they should to be lighter .

They might look like that right out of the shipping container, but I agree that they would probably be sunbleached into a much paler look after a few months of use. Still, I really like the camouflage paint work on those Rangers...

Super! Ideal for a diorama! Will these models go into mass production?

Nice work!
I paint my figure with Vallejo Colours. Have anybody a good Basic Colour for the US Uniforms in Vietnam ?
I second that, I painted few test figures a lot time ago, but still unsatisfied with result... Tried VMC70.967 Olive Green, 70.895 Gunship Green, 70.893 U.S. Dark Green, 70.830 WWII German Fieldgrey and different mixtures

I read some 15mm gamers use VMC 70.924 WWII Russian Uniform, but for me it's too yellowish shade :eh: (but it's nice color for jungle boots' canvas)
I also paintedTiger Stripe camo, distinctive for USSF involved in Vietnam. I used VMC 70.819 Iraqi Sand as basecoat, washed with Reikland Fleshshade, then I softly drybrushed base color. Next, small irregular dots of green (VMC 70.833 SS Camo Bright Green) and earth (VMC 70.893 Flat Earth) were added. Finally I painted thin, jagged black stripes (VMC 70.950 Black).
If you want darker version, use VMC 70.887 Brown Violet (or VMC70.888 Olive Grey or... any dark olive tone) and VMC70.826 German Camo Medium Brown for dots.

Hello Chris ,
thank you for this interesting answer . I like your Colours of the Tigerstripe uniform, much more like the real uniform , than my try .
Next 2 sets coming for painting I try the Colours of your lighter Version.
