Late Roman Republic Legionaries

Posted by Arbogastiz on 27 Jun 2018, 20:42

Hi friends, you've already seen my roman HQ from Esci, now it's time to show you my w.i.p Italeri legionaries. As you can see, some work have to be done. I dunno what kind of genius designed this set but we got only 2 (literally: TWO !!! :eh: ) poses of fighting soldiers- throwing pilum and forming testudo (but the front rank - consisted from legionaries holding their scuta in front of them - is still missing). I like figure wielding gladius in his hand, but there's only one (!!!) in whole set. As a consolation I can only add Caesar on horse, centurio, cornicen and pretorian signifier are sculpted very nice.

Yes, this set is really strange and was an utter disappointment, when I bought it, because of the absurd selection of poses. But the sculpting is quite good, historical accuracy of the set is OK, and your paintjob on these figures is excellent!

Very nice brushwork, really! And I share your frustration with the set, pretty disappointing.
I see some shields are missing. Is it because your are working on it? If you plan not to use them, I would love to have them. I painted same figures years ago (see here http://flowersinyourcannons.blogspot.com/2015/04/marian-roman-dba-ii49.html) and some of the shield went lost after how do not know how many wargames.

Love the painting style! Only two poses, but the shields make them pop! Yes indeed. BB

Thanks,
As you can see, I tried to give them more diversity painting their tunics, scabbards (dyed leather) or even Montefortino helmets in different colors.
Mr Andrea - I'm sorry, but I don't have any free shields, all of them will be attached to figures. Also as the javelins/pila. But if you have one, you can make silicon mould and cast scuta only for personal, not commercial use.
BTW I like your painted figures very much, the General is also set as your profile photo, nice :-)

Great paintwork! I love the metal colors of the armour. And the shadows on the shields (pointwash with oil paint?) have a very nice effect.

Hi huib ! I didn't use oil washes, it's Vallejo Flat Red 70.957 mixed with Black 70.950, water and some vodka as flow improver. When it's dry i highlighted bigger areas of shield between wings and spina with Flat Red and then I used Scarlet 70.817 as final highlight of red. Ring armors are painted with old Citadel Boltgun metal, drybrushed with Chainmail and secured by Gloss varnish

Yes Peter, cheap polish vodka :) I use it ONLY as thinner and flow improver to my Vallejo and Citadel paints

Great paintjob, Arbogastiz. I've always loved these Italeri figures, but never painted them :(

Congratulations. :yeah:

Santi.
