Roman watchtower

Posted by Mr. Andrea on 18 May 2018, 10:43

Hi all. Building a roman watchtower to use as camp for my DBA battles. Got inspiration from the Zvezda plastic Roman fort (now out of production). Really happy about how the tower is coming out. So happy, that it may evolve into a full fort. Few more info and pics in my blog https://flowersinyourcannons.blogspot.de/2018/05/wip-roman-watchtower.html

Nice model, it reminds me of the one at Vindolanda.

I vote for the full fort.

Thanks for supporting the idea of the fort. I have in mind a modular fort, made of 90x90mm square tiles. It would allow adjusting to various wargaming situations. Any idea what I can use for the tiles? Thanks

The base tile material would depend on how many you'd require. I think 4mm balsa would be a good solid base.

A German supplier on ebay has 1000 x 100 x 4mm for Euro2.25 so it's not deadly

Thanks, Fred. Haven't think of balsa. That would be perfect. I go for it

May I ask where you need tiles? I am not sure if I got the correct translation...

Btw: Really a great project!

Hi Jan, remember our group project parade? I need similar square bases (tiles) for a modular Roman fort. 9 tiles in total, each 9x9cm. The lateral tiles will come with palisade, the corner ones also with watchtower and two in the middle with gate. In the central tile I'll put a couple of tents.
All together it will form what in DBA game is called BUA (built-up-area). Single tiles, used separately, can also represent camps, another terrain feature of DBA game.
Let's go for a beer and I will sketch everything on the coaster.

The Roman fort is taking shape, at least the idea of it. Thanks for your support! :yeah:
Just wondering if it really needs a watchtower at each corner. Its size is not big, only 27x27cm. Maybe, only two towers at opposite corners would be enough. What to do you think?

Meanwhile, as you see, ladders were added to the watchtower

I am now thinking that you keep the watchtower as a separate entity, it's certainly made well enough to do so and on the fort have the towers above the two gates. Go on. you know you want to :P

This tower is really nice! Demonstrates impressive skills at scratch-building. If you opt for only two towers, I would suggest to put them at the same side, guarding the entrance of the fort. Such mini fortlets actually existed, and the would have only one gate, not four as expected for larger garrisons.
I have the "Roman" Fort by Zvezda, and it is useful exactly because of the towers that come with it. The palisades, however, are looking seriously un-Roman. they are identical with those from Zvezda's Russian Fort. So this kit is a mixed bag, I would say.

looks very nice and neat!
I would like to know: is there any information on the technology of production of boards from logs, which were used in ancient Rome? because for such structures you need a lot of boards ...

I have noted that the one gated forts only had one gate. The two gated forts actually did have two gates.
No fools those Romans you know. :P
