Ardennes Diorama

Posted by Quepwik on 20 Feb 2018, 14:22

Here is my new project that I present to you, a diorama in the Ardennes.

It depicts a movement of troops and vehicles just before the famous report of road crossing at Kaiserbaracke (where we see the famous schwimmwagen in front of the panel Malmedy / St Vith and the passenger has long taken a long time wrong for Peiper) .

At this cross of Kaiserbaracke the Hansen Group separates from the Knittel Group.

I will locate my diorama near the village of Born, a few kilometers before Kaiserbaracke, early in the morning of December 18, 1944.
A Sdkfz 250 Neu, member of the Knittel group, has joined one of Hansen's group Jagdpanzer IV and has to exchange on the guidelines to follow.
The two columns will probably mix from here to separate a few kilometers further to the crossroads of Kaiserbaracke, what we see in the video mentioned above.

The ingredients of the project will be:

- A Sdkfz 250 Neu [MK72]

- A Jagdpanzer IV [Dragon / Hasegawa]

- Ardennes House [DioDump]

- Probably a bike [Preiser] or a Kubelwagen [?] If the place allows it.

- Then, various figurines of tankers and panzergrenadiers.

The editing of the Jagdpanzer IV is already well advanced despite some failures.
At 1/72, the catch is that none of the main available references (Dragon, Hasegawa and Trumpeter) are correct.
We will say that the least worse is that of Hasegawa but we must keep the idea to change the running gear, coming from a Panzer IV Revell for example

Unfortunately, the installation of the fenders in photoetched on the model went wrong. I do not really understand where the problem came from, but they were wider than necessary and were a good millimeter above the casemate. A gagging attempt to make up for it went wrong.

So I opted for the "B" plan, the pose of the Hasegawa's casemate on the model Dragon.

The transplant took well, there was no rejection!
The casemate fits very well to the Dragon sill even if it is a little bit too wide. After small blow grinding / sanding, we now see only fire.

Other ingredients have gone into the dance: Photodécoupe Part, RB Model cannon, some Revell pieces and 2-3 home crafts, which give this. And finally a painting challenge to raise for camouflage in "camo discs", at 1/72!

Less talk, now photos :

This reminds me of earlier times, when I was still building vehicles. It was always fun...

But watching your modeling activity is also fun. Very nice work so far, hopefully new photos will follow soon. :yeah:

A lot of details for the Jagdpanzer as the interior for the nice done Sd kfz 250 of MK.

I like the way of building the hard plastic track in one section very much.
And I am a bit surprised that beside ACE it is the only available plastic kit.
Non of the big manufactures do a Sd kfz 250.

Maybe you know it already.
If you get the option to get an Kübelwagen from S-Models , use it.
It is by distance the best detailed kit, if available.

Hope to see soon some progress.

Many thanks !

So, I will try S-Model Kubelwagen.

The MK72 models are really beautiful.

Here we go for painting:

First the primer, Mr Surfacer 1200.

Image

Then the 2 brown and green colors of the German camo (and the macro photo makes me say that it will be time to invest in a real good airbrush!) :

Then the tedious job with simple cookie cutters.
Masking tape on a small piece of wood, neither too hard nor too soft.
I used the diameters 1 - 1.5 and 2mm

And that gives this:

Next step, the yellow-sand.
Hoping that it produces the right result

And gentlemen, I present you a good model for the trash!

The worst happened. The mask created an extra thickness and the paint drooled.

We call it a disaster and money fucked up!

Image

I will try to fix that, I do not know how.
But I'll have to go to "Plan B" if I want my diorama to be finished for Saumur Modelshow Contest.
I will look for another vehicle to replace it. The Kampfgruppe Knittel also had Schwimmwagen, Sdkfz 222 and Puma of different types. The Hansen group also had Grids. Or else, I go on a Tiger II Peiper Group, which I have in stock.

For the "repair" I have to find the right product stripping and I would then try a more classic painting broadband. finish the lozenges at the moment. Fortunately, I can save the rocker that was not glued. So I must strip "that" the top. I'm already going to soak in water and overdose powdered laundry to see.

Beyond painting and masking, anyway, I am absolutely not satisfied with the look and the shapes between the circles. It's not at all what I wanted to happen. The spaces were too big.

It's been a long time such a mess had not happened to me! It must be said that I cumulated the risks with this method of painting with caches and the test of a new painting of the AK Interactive range.
Double test, double unprocessed.

I leave this step in hibernation in a distant cave!

I'm sorry that you have problems but I hope you'll finish it in time.
I would like to hear more about those "cookie cutters". Are they self made or can be bought online?

Head up Quepwik!

Before you trash it and start over possibly try a very light grit wet sand. First clear coat (gloss) the entire vehicle. Then with either light or medium grit sandpaper wet sand the entire area.

I used to get that end result quite a bit when building NASCAR models that had multiple color paint schemes.

The Glanzer method seems to work perfectly.

My tank is now completely pickled.

All is not lost. I refinish the stripping to make it almost new!

Thank you all for your advice

It is I who made a mistake in the dilution of paint, the method works.

Look at the beautiful work of Mark Kleinfelter:

The Glanzer did the trick!

Some loose pieces (including the front mudguard lost right) and putty for the raw rendering of the mask to be redone but the main is saved.
However, some pieces have become brittle, such as the schurzen supports.
I did not take the risk of inferring soft caterpillars. So I soaked and rubbed several times the front and back of the underside.

As a reminder, BEFORE FIRST PAINTING:

AFTER GLANZER STRIPPING:

In case, I still went to B plan in duplicate with a Puma (Hasegawa) of Kampfgruppe Knittel. I know they exist but unfortunately, not much info on it. In all, the Kampfgruppe, reconnaissance unit I remind you, had to have 16 Sdkfz 234 of any type (1, 2 and 3). Some are also survivors of the Battle of Normandy and other brand new perceived just before this offensive.

The disc camouflage scheme has driven more than one crazy including me, I've tried several tenicas, including screens like you, but it did not work out either.
Finally what I do is take a color fiber marker, cut the tip, wet it in the paint and make the disc marks with that.
It requires some practice, and there is no perfet result, but it is the best I could find.
