Polish Winged Hussars

Posted by FatFather on 07 Feb 2018, 10:54

Hi,
Meanwhile others project I started work with Polish Winged Hussars, set Zvezda. Lances could be longer a specially against infantrie's pikes, but I read, that hussars used "drzewek" (polish simply translated "trees") shorter, and longer. I colud be long discussion, and difficult if somebody trust only in one version of true ;-) . Plastic could be harder, but I love this set, but from Orion much more. I will made dio with charge of Lithuanians regiments on mercenaries infantry in battle Kłuszyn in 1610 year. Infantry holded position behind wood fence, and hussars made break and charged few times.

Please forgive me, but I'm proud of tiger fur on this captain.

As I wrote lances should be longer and in squadron streamers should be in the same colour, but I made this specially. I made test with materials for banners, and I think it's good.

I used some cossacks for... adjutants, I havn't better word for this called in Polish "pocztowi", maybe "henchmen"?

I like him

Maybe somebody will ask: "Why most of them is on white/grey horses?". Hussars preferred this colours, but... if you could read books of army enlistment, you will see colours described "rust mouse grey", "rotten brown", and others.

Thank you for watching

Kłuszyn yes, the unholy alliance between Sweden and Russia (!) against Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a real defeat for the Swedes and Russians! I'm also working on a Hussar project but for three day battle outside Warzaw 1656, I think the Zvezda figures are for more late period. Well done on the figures and an interesting time period.

Fat father , they are impressive figures! that Tiger skin was probably very difficult for the Hussar to acquiere, and for you to paint!

I am also curious about the lack of wings :) ¿?

Yes, you are right and it's easy to say this. In the end of this project I will show how they could appeared. Zvezda set is dedicated for 1683 year, they are in full, exclusive armor. If specialist is looking on these figures, he see diffrences. I'm sure, some hussars could appear in this way even in early XVII century. Maybe, some day, if I'll be better in mu hobby I will try made hussars as 1610, 1656 years.
I'm wonder on your Warsaw project.

"Wingless"... I made mistake writing "Winged Hussars". Mea Culpa. I'll try explain in short legend with wings. Historians are sure that Hussars were winged in XVIII century in funeral ceremonies of their veterans-friends. Place for wings on armor we know only from museums exhibits, but there are examples from XVIII century. More originals are in Sweden :-D . I didn't saw them.
In fight wings were used as psychological weapon, for make loud (frightening enemies horses - works only in first fight), for make biggers, more own armies. In memories was written about using from magazines all lances placed upright to show for enemy (if he could saw only tops lances) "we have more cavalry". Wings could be dangerous for user if for axample Tatar used lasso. That's why wings often were mounted on saddle. Wings on back's armor had "easy click" mechanism to get off wings.
In short, hussars used wings incidentally.

Equipment of hussars was very expensive. Hussars earned 60/120 zlotys per year (in 1609) to 200 zlotys per year (in 1690). Cost of armor: 200 zlotys, horse 30 - 300 zlotys in early XVII century and 500 - 1500 zlotys in 1660 - 1683 years, In 1689 tiger skin costed 100 zlotys, in 1620 cheetah skin - 200 zlotys. That's why lithuanian hussars used wolfs skins.

I'm very glad about your interest in my project.
