Christmas Decorations!

Posted by Marvin on 03 Dec 2017, 11:25

I developed something like a Christmas tradition over recent years. About four years ago, looking at the Christmas decorations over the fireplace, I thought what the display needed was a few festive figures. And so I started painting some special Christmas-styled troops (nothing says 'the season of goodwill' quite like the appearance of soldiers :P ).

I began by painting some Revell Austrian infantry from the 7 years war, selecting a suitably colourful uniform design. These became the 1st Noel Regiment of Foot. :xd: A few years ago, I added a second regiment - The Yule Grenadiers.

They alternate each year with the 1st Noel Regiment over the fireplace. And I've been quietly adding a handful of figures each year to both regiments. This year, I've decided to introduce some Christmas cavalry. Like the infantry, they are all depicted in deep snow. ;-)

Introducing the Carolling Hussars and the Christingle Dragoons...

The Carolling Hussars
They have a piece of red tinsel in their mirleton hats. Their horse furniture features a design of a crown with a small letter "C" for carolling.

The Christingle Dragoons
They wear a piece of gold tinsel in the tricornes. I've painted a christingle icon on to their horse furniture.

This post is in "Work in progress" topics as I've still to add some more decoration around their bases, which I intend to share later. I'm also working on a flag bearer for each regiment with flags designed by my 11 year old daughter on her tablet - unfortunately my printer has stopped working but again I will display some pics soon.

Moderators: one last thought - perhaps this could inspire a kind of Christmas Group Build? The challenge for forum members to contribute by creating and sharing one Christmas figure they've created for the season. Figure could be anything even vaguely seasonal - Santa, a reindeer, a Roman cataphract in a snow drift, a figure from a nativity scene, a tank with some tinsel on it...

Just a thought...

Awesome work Marvin. They're really decorative eye candies.

What did you use for snow? Baking soda?

Very nice idea! And with your painting they definitely will look splendid at the fireplace! Some of mine will look better in the fireplace, but that's another matter. :-)

Fabulous figs! I really like old Marshall Forwards on the rocking horse!

I thought you said Nat King Cole for a moment: "Merry Christmas to you..." :xd:

Sorry Kekso - didn't answer your question! I use "Soft Flake snow" SN140 by Woodland Scenics. I know that other solutions (e.g. baking soda) can cause problems but this Woodland Scenics stuff is great!

I did that on purpose indeed! Nat is Dutch for "wet " in English! And with that fire... ;-)

That figure on the rocking horse is from schilling. They have some nice Christmas figures, but also decorations! ;-)

Nice idea! And absolutely splendidly painted figures.

I had to look up Christingle. So i learned something, which is a bonus. :-)

Also, I enjoyed seeing Peter's Christmas figures. That Schilling Blucher would make a very nice Christmas tree decoration. :merrychristmas:

Here are the flags for my two Christmas cavalry regiments, currently acting as part of my Christmas display. Both flags were designed by my young daughter on her tablet! :merrychristmas:
